Rear window seal replacement

Hi all,

I have an '85 300td that has leaking seals in the back hatch window as well as the two rear side windows.

I'm looking to replace these seals and wondering if this is a DIY fix or something I'd need to take in.

If a DIY is possible, are there any how-to resources out there or can someone give a quick run down of the procedure?

Gotta keep all this Seattle rain out of my interior

You could DIY, My friend that owned a body shop has his glass man handle it. Apparently, there is a lot less breakage involved. I had an SD windshield installed - $225 total including glass, labor and 10% sales tax.

Insurance companies get a discount from the glass companies. See if your auto agent will hook you up. I'm licensed for P&C. My friend who actually works in that part of the business said he can get me the discount. I didn't think of it when buying above so that price is from negotiating only.

...and unless the other seals are newer, set aside money & time to replace all of them. If they aren't already gone, they will go. Soon.

R&R of the rear winshield

is a scary proposition for DIY and expensive if you screw up. $100 to a glass pro is cheap insurance, ask any body shop.

One more depressing item to consider; a leaking rear windshield is often a function of a rusted out channel under the rubber weatherstripping. It was so on my 1983 coupe and if you do a search on the topic you will find it is common on our 25 to 30 year old cars.

Keep us posted.

Also, you may find very bad rust under the seals, especially if they have been leaking for a while.
