81 240D Drivebelt Replacement
Hi all!
I was driving my '81 240D about a week ago when the belt that runs from the alternator to the fan snapped. Unfortunately, I didn't notice it until I was about two miles of highway away from where it happened.
So, I went to the local auto parts store, and they asked for my year, make, and model. I told them, and they asked which belt I needed: The accessory belt, which they didn't have, or the power steering belt, which they did. I was pretty sure it wasn't the accessory belt that snapped, so I said the power steering. They sold me a Duralast 17405 (13A1030) V-Belt. Now, i've been trying to Attach it to the Alternator (Circled in red in first attachment) to the fan (circled in green in second attachment), but when I do it has way too much slack (outlined in blue in third attachment).
There are two things I can think of; Either I have the wrong belt, or I need to attach it to something else, too. There is a third spot where it looks like the belt could go (Circled in yellow in second, third, and fourth attachments), but in order to get to it, I'd have to take off the other belt (Outlined in purple in fourth attachment). So, before I start taking off things I might not be able to easily replace, I figured I'd look around for some advice. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
