headlight adjustment spring help

hi folks,

i just swapped out the sealed beams on my W123 240D for bosch H4s. nice! but i can't figure how to get the tensioning spring back in place. i can pop the perpendicular end through the holes in the lamp assembly but the loop points opposite from the pin it needs to be on. torquing it 180 degrees seems to take a terrific amount of force and the hook can't be threaded through the cup in the opposite way (it has to enter from the larger hole and the tip returns in the smaller one).

what is the correct procedure to follow to reinstall the spring? the location of the spring can be seen at 8:30 PM in both these photos.

(i admit i am cross-posting because i'm stuck and found no help on the other forum... yikes!)
