W123 1985 300D Monovalve question
Valve is bad, rubber is bad also. I don't want to go with a cheap ebay kit. Where can I buy the bosch kit?
"I replaced it with a new Bosch unit (DO NOT get the cheap eBay units for $25) that cost approx $50. Again, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU GET THE HIGHER QUALITY BOSCH UNIT. I got mine from my indy shop -- they have a good supply of them in stock. DO NOT SCRIMP when it comes to these parts. Spend the extra $15 -- in the long run it will be worth it." Please help! |

If that is a post on this forum that you quoted, it's very out of date. The price differential for a Bosch kit -- if you can find one, good luck there -- was last time I checked more like 5x - 8x the MTC kit, almost in line with going to Mercedes for OE.
At that price difference, the quality improvement from the Bosch or OE really isn't as relevant. Also, what you quoted was one person's opinion of the MTC. Others have had good service from that kit (in my case, two Canadian winters and counting).

I can only attest to what my experience was with MTC. I went through 3 MTC monovalve kits last year (1 in May, and 2 in November). They all failed the same way in that they had little tiny holes in the rubber diaphragm. This caused no heat at highway speeds. I installed an OEM in November, and it has worked flawlessly. I was paying about $30 for the MTC kits, and the OEM was about $120.
As an aside, I also installed an MTC aux pump at the same time. It lasted 1000 miles before the screws holding the motor to the pump housing loosened causing me to lose most of my coolant in downtown Chicago. It sprayed all over the engine compartment, and I was not a happy camper. I tried tightening them, but they just kept on loosening. Installed an OEM aux pump, and it has worked flawlessly. No MTC or URO parts for me. EVER. Jon 1985 300D 107k 1968 250S |

AFAIK the factory rebuild kit is NLA, has been for several years. You might find an NOS kit for sale but it will be $$$ if the seller realizes what (s)he has. Otherwise your choice is between the aftermarket kit or a new monovalve.

The OE Mercedes kit is listed as available in the PeachParts catalogue.
There is a guy on eBay who is selling what he claims to be Bosch rebuild kits: 190801242075 at what looks like a very reasonable price. However, I trust some of the eBay vendors NOT.

My kit came in a Mercedes box, and it was made in France. The dealer quoted me $168. I opted to wait at $120.
