83sd trans install problems

I screwed up while installing the auto transmission in 83 300sd!
I did not realize that the torque converter had to be matched to the three indents in the fly wheel. After I had the transmission mounted and all the bolts started, I checked that the convrter was still turning free, after I tighten the Transmission all the way to the engine, It was not free. I then backed all the bolts back out a few turns and then I could turn the converter. It seemed to turn with some friction and after turning it alittle, it kind of dropped togeather. What I mean is the transmission fell all the way to the engine block closing the gap.

I know the converter was seated all the way into the pump.I don't think the pump ears were damaged. I think there was about 1/4 inch pressure pushing the converter back against the case or the pump when I snugged the bolts down.

I almost think that it might be ok, but I would be more comfortable to remove and look for any damage. Do you guys think I should remove the pump and check it for damage?

This transmission had the safety lock on the side to hold the converter in place Are these reliable enough to hold the converter into the locking lugs?

On other vehicles I was able to spin the converters all the way around after the transmissions were bolted up. But this one got me!

Thanks, Tom
