4-Prong Socket for 722.120 Output Yoke:

Anyone have a part number for this??? I had one but it never came home after being loaned...

DeliveryValve 04-05-2013 03:53 AM

The AST tool I have is MB part number equivalent 115 589 08 07 00.

Works great on that flange nut.

Stretch 04-05-2013 04:06 AM

That's strange I have nearly the same number

915 589 01 07 00

replaced by

115 589 01 07 00

Found here on startek

I decided not to buy it in the end 'cos I didn't want to shell out yet another 120 euros on a socket to undo those old nuts. The new ones come in a 12 point form - so why bother with the old?

I'm a tool junky. That's why I have it. However I did use it like four times already and I used it on a 716.210 to remove the flange nut couple days ago.

Here's what the 115 589 08 07 00 looks like.

Different look at the body than 115 589 01 07 00 that you posted.

Well thanks for the feedback - I'm now unsure if the socket I found on startek is actually the right one...

...the description seems good - I'll put a warning in that thread I started just in case I'm unknowingly steering people in the wrong direction.

Looking at the samtag website,
Mercedes Tools - Mercedes Benz Special Tools & Repair Information-Tool

The 115 589 01 07 00 has the dimensions of
A = 41.50mm B = 35.00mm C= 7.50mm

The 115 589 08 07 00 has the dimensions of
A=42.50mm, B=35.25mm , C=5.50mm

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...1&d=1365147692

They are both pretty close in size.

Wow that's strange - very similar - but obviously not going to fit if you get the wrong one.

It seems as though there were two generations of these slotted nuts...

...unless the information on startekinfo is wrong. For the socket I found it does say

Quote:

115 589 01 07 00

Model 107, 114, 115, 116, 123

Used for grooved nut on the flange of the output shaft.

¾” Drive.

If I remember correctly this slotted socket is nothing like the size on the rear wheel hub (W114/5/6 W123 W126)

Stretch 04-05-2013 05:01 AM

I think I've worked it out now.

Putting the 115 589 08 07 00 into startekinfo you get this

amb

Which specifies

Quote:

Transmission K4C – 025

Use/specification:

Used for removal of slotted (round) nut on the output shaft. ½” Drive.

Definitely for the automatic transmission.

The other one I found must be for manual transmissions. Is that a good assumption?

Definitely different. 115 589 02 07 00 ---
A=54.75mm, B=48.25mm, C=7.25mm

Not so sure. I used the 115 589 08 07 00 on a four speed manual couple days ago.

Here is what Samtag states on their ad.

Quote:

115 589 01 07 00

Pin Wrench Socket needed for R&R of grooved nut on drive pinion shaft flange of differential. 1/2" drive. It is applicable on Chassis - W107, W114, W115, W116, W123, W126. Models with constant velocity joint axles. A = 41.50mm B = 35.00mm C= 7.50mm
But I've used the 115 589 08 07 00 on a diff also and it works.

Thanks,

That's what I will need to swap out my rear trans seal, which has decided to weep a bit....

So, the replacement nut comes in simple 12-point???? because I ordered a new nut, washer and seal from my MBZ dealer for only $9.75 USD, but haven't seen it yet. What size 12 point????

I didn't get mine from the dealer - I bought it for about the same price as you from a transmission re-builder - so I can't say for sure that the MB supplied part will be a 12 point nut...

...however, if it is you'll be scrabbling for your 32mm 12 point socket - then you'll need to go and order a deep 32mm 12 point socket 'cos a short one can't be driven with the output shaft sticking through the back end of the socket!

I think this is the same 30mm nut for the differential. I didn't see a difference and it shares the same thread.

Edit: I don't think 32mm is correct. I do know a 30mm socket fits the nut.

whunter 04-08-2013 05:21 AM

Don't waste money !!

I chisel the old nut off.

The replacement nut is a metric 12-point.

There is no logical reason to buy a tool you will use once to remove a discontinued nut.

ill need to do something w this tool

Hello,

I have an auto trannt out of car and a manual in a car. The yolk on the manual is shot. Sadly one of the links in this thread no longer works. Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

Stretch 06-27-2014 02:28 AM

I think the main message of this thread is that tool junkies like these sockets but as you can't get the slotted nuts any more - that the new nuts are 12 point 30mm ones - you are best off not bothering with it.

greazzer 06-27-2014 11:18 AM

Good luck trying to chisel that nut off. I used the 4 prong tool and it's a very robust tool, well made. It's one of those tools which is a lifesaver, but probably only used a few times. A definite tool to have if you're a lifer with these cars.

anthonyelectric 06-27-2014 05:57 PM

Hello.

I am hoping someone would be interested in loaning me this yolk tool or directing me to a place I can purchase one.

anthonyelectric 06-27-2014 06:00 PM

I should add, the Manual transmission is still in the car and I couldn't imagine attempting to chisel this nut out in this manner.

There is a point missed.
Not everyone has a 30mm 12 point socket. So you could still end up buying a Tool.

The pic is of a Lot of Tools I bought on eBay about 4 Years ago. Apparently I have 3 of the Pin Sockets. However, they were made by KD Tool and don't have the Mercedes Part Number on them so I could never figure out what they were specifucally used for and I have not needed to remove any slotted Nuts so far.

Also I thought I read some where that the Manual Transmission also uses simliar Pin Sockets inside of it somewhare.

anthonyelectric 06-28-2014 01:41 PM

Thank you for all the input. One member offered to loan me his slotted socket. I will now attempt to order from the local dealer. I have ordered the flex disk set from an online source and will replace the rear one soon after I get her running again.

Thank you for all the help.

anthonyelectric 07-23-2014 01:29 AM

I have completed this repair, then drove the car 700 miles within 2 days without an issue. May I also add all 700 miles were on WVO!

I could not have imagined completing this without the 4-prong tool.
In the need to remove the yoke off the out-of-car A/T, we ended up strapping it to my 4-wheeler's bars, just working with it on the floor (or with my neighbor standing on it) did not allow it to come off. We found those methods only led to turning the entire transmission!

Pictures of the damaged flex disc as well as the destroyed yoke and bolts will be posted soon.

Thank you again for helping me get my 240D back on the road!

anthonyelectric 07-29-2014 07:32 PM

The parts that failed, its a DOOSEY

Old thread, does anyone have this tool to rent? Correct part number is 115589080700. Or something comparable to remove this nut? This is the original and does not have the nice 12 point.
