W123 Question on properly bleeding/venting the injection pump(audible rattling sound)

Hey there,

So I am in the midst of working on my '85 300TD and have just replaced all the copper crush washers from the delivery valves on the injection pump. I put all the lines back together and am in the process of bleeding the air from the system.

According to the service manual I am to operate the hand pump until the bypass valve at the injection pump opens in which I will hear an audible rattling sound. My question is, usually just how many pumps does this take? I pumped about 20 times or so yet never heard anything. I am afraid to just keep pumping endlessly till I hear the sound as I am afraid of flooding the cylinders with fuel and introducing hyrdo-lock and doing damage to my engine. If this is even an issue in a diesel? This is my first diesel so I am a bit unsure.

So, if anyone has an idea of how much I should need to pump to clear out the injection pump, please let me know, thank you!

You won`t hurt anything by over pumping the primer pump. the primer pulls fuel from the tank, then upto the fuel filter then back to the Injection pump. the line from the filter connects to the left front of the IP. then the line on the back side of the pump connects to the top of the filter and returns back to the tank.

Where the line connects on the back side of the IP, is the pressure Relief valve.

You won`t flood the cylinders no matter how much or long you pump the primer. the only way fuel gets into the cylinders, is when the engine is turning over and then the IP pushes fuel to the Injectors.

If your fuel system is totally dry, you might be pumping a 100 pumps.

Pumping with the Hand Primer only clears the Air out of the Fuel injection Pump Housing (the Fuel Supply System)
The Fuel Supply System is not the High Pressure Injection part of the Fuel Injection Pump. That High Pressure part takes place inside of the Elements.
You cannot create enough pressure with the Hand Primer to open a Fuel Injector and flood the Cylinder with Fuel.

So Pump away as much as you want. Mine makes sort of a buzzing or low pitched squeeling sound when the Air is out of it.

After that you need to loosen the Fuel Injection Hard Line Nuts at the Fuel Injectors and crank the Engine until you see Fuel coming out. Then Tighten the Nuts. That bleeds the Air out of the High Pressure part of the Fuel Injection System.

If Air gets trapped inside of the Fuel Injection Hard lines it takes an ungodly amount of cranking to get it out with out lossening the Nuts at the Injectors.

I was going to call it more of a farting sound for lack of a better reference.

I have never heard what I would call a rattle on my cars.
