RF CD changer in a w123 - help needed

Hi,

I posted this in the car audio section, but just realized that most of the remaining 123 cars are probably 300 and 240Ds, and as such, people with those cars probably frequent this board more then the car audio one (judging by the total number of threads and posts )

I would like to put an RF cd changer into my 1983 300D. The constraint is that Id liek to keep my old becker radio, for the OEM look... I would liek any help I could get on how I can undertake this. I will be changing my antenna soon, and could do it all at once.
I have a few preliminary questions, but any other additional infdo would be great too.

-How would I power the changer if I had it in the trunk?
-If I didnt have it in the trunk, where is the best place to put it?
-Regardless how do I power it?
-All hat I know about RF changers is that they exist and could be used to keep my same head unit and add the changer on an FM station. I assume there is some sort of connection box that connects into the antenna wire. Will ti connect directly? Will I need an andapter to connect the antenna? Will having the RF changer in line with the antenna cause the power functions from the radio and the dash switch for antenna height to get messed up?

Any info is most appreciated. I am kind of wary of trying it myself or taking it someplace before I learn some things about the procedure...

One more thing... Sorry... Where/how would I mount it? I dont really know... I dont think the seatback would be the best, but Im wary of drilling through metal... Makes it kind of hard to decide...
Thanks

JMH

If it's in the Trunk keep it towards the front of the car incase you get water leakage.

The way an RF CD player works is it sends out the music on a certain radio frequency that isn't used by an actual radio station that is picked up by your antenna.

There might be space under the passenger seat. If so, what I did in other cars is use metal plates with coutnersink screws in them in such a way as to match with the brakcets of the changer. Then I attached the plates with double sided tape to the floor of the car and cut slits in the carpet to let the screws through. I wouldn't feel right drilling holes in the floor of the car. It's not the most secure setup, but you'd have to tear the carpet to take the changer without undoing the nuts. I used washers to level the changer. Sorry if the tenses are off.

If there's no space under the passenger seat, it'll have to go in the trunk. You can hang it from the deck but that makes it visible when the trunk lid's open. I have mine vertically in the pocket behind the right wheel. It's about 2" above the floor of the pocket because the pocket is a certified flood zone. My car came with a Becker changer so I had a bracket to use with the replacement Sony RF changer. All the bracket is is a T-frame that bolts to the horizontal surface inboard of the pocket. It's made of pretty thick metal (1/4" ?) with continuous welds. It's actually an angle section welded to a flat section so there's a long weld line, not the edge of one flat section into another flat section. I guess that prevents it from vibrating independently of the car.

As for wiring, the changer will have a couple of thich cables that should reach the area behind your Becker. Extensions are available from Radio Shack. You plug the antenna cable into one, and the other plugs into your Becker. The changer will need switched power, always live power and ground. You can probably tap into the Becker's wiring for those.

Then there's the matter of the controls. I prefer the kind with a wired remote. I leave mine in the tray behind the shifter. Fancier units have a fixed display and a remote control. MB dashes don't have extra space for the display. I've seen folks stick the display near the shifter. Do you really want to use double sided tape on that nice veneer?

Email me privately if you have more questions.
