odometer quit working, need help!
I have a 1985 300SD. I got the cluster out easily and all the electrical connections are off. Surprise! That was too easy! With cluster lying on workbench I'm afraid to go any further not knowing what to look for or what to take off next.
Does the white plastic box behind the speedo come off next? Then what to do next? |

Just remove all the screws and the three pieces will just lift out.

Do a search for odometer fix. When you remove the speedo and then take the odometer wheels out be careful or you can screw up the miles it reads. There is a small nylon gear that is probably loose from wear. You can order the part and replace it or first try some locktite and see if it holds.

Or just knurl up the shaft a bit so the gear grips. There are a number of descriptions of the fix on here.

follow the Dieselgiant.com writeup for disassembly, but use pliers to knurl the shaft instead of glue/loctite...

+1 on dieselgiant. I used their instructions to fix mine. I was scared to death the whole time thinking I was going to mess something up. Be very carefull with the green thread locker. I almost had a drip of it go down into the number wheels! It was a close call. Odo has been working great since the repair a few months ago.
I knurled the shaft and used loctite. I don't plan on needing to fix this again!

knurling is sufficient. I would not use the green loctite... WAAAAY too much possibility of ruining the ODO.
