1980 300 CD parts car turned project

I have gotten some requests for pictures of the CD's. This thread will focus on the 80 as it is more of a project car then the 84. I will try to upload alot of pictures.

The back story:
My father's 84 300cd has some worn out seats. The MB-tex is holding up real well considering the millage but the foam is worn in. We were surfing CL looking for seats and stumble on a 1980 300Cd not running for reasonable money. The plan was to swap the seats and some other parts between the cars and then resell the 80 but it may be turned into a daily driver and sold later on.

Here is a picture of my fathers 84 300cd. It looks real good cleaned up! has 320,000 miles so far.. Was a cali car and then spent years over in Greece before returning to MA.

The history of the 80:
The car came out of Texas orginally. It came up to Mass in 1995 and was put away in 2001 because the owner got a company car. She had parked it in the garage in 2001 and it sat there untill we pulled it home in Febuary of 2013. Sitting in the garage all this time saved the car from getting rusty. At this point I am pretty much done buying any car that is from the north east. They are just to rusty and why fight with a rusty car when you can start with something so much better? I find it alot easier to swap motors and interiors then do rust repair.

Here is the 1980 300 CD as it sat from 2001-feb 2,2013

After checking it out I found the 80 was not a turbo car and had no sunroof and no passenger side mirror. The battery I brought did not crank it over but the windows and some other systems did work.
The seller had a lot of interest but a good portion did not want it due to the lack of a turbo and the others who checked it out low balled him bad. Upon calling us back we came up with a fair price and picked it up with the old 77 chevy (the grinch). I removed the D-shaft on the tow to aviod damage to the transmission. Was a 2 hour tow and went well

Once home we went through the car checking out what worked and what did not. Pulled the battery tray looking for rust and found no real rot but it does have surface rust that I cleaned and coated with POR-15 silver. I use the silver because it has aluminum in it which fill any surface pits well. With a new bosch battery it started and ran rather well even on the old diesel. Then the Blizzard came and burried the car.

I went through and changed the oil, PS fluid/filter, checked the coolant and transmission fluid levels, checked the front end, pulled the door panals and lubed the windows, got the aftermarket third brake light working, replaced the passenger side window regulater because it was bent, vac tested the central locking (all works except the pass door), removed the dash dimmer switch and jump wired it so the dash lights are bright and all work, changed the fuel filters and added diesel Klieen to help with the old fuel. Also found that the Climate controll is not working suprise suprise.

The N/A 617 really seems decent to me. Faster off the line then the 84 turbo CD and pulls well.

Since the grill is bent I decided to black out the incert. I used rusto plastic paint in a satin black. Cleaned it the best I could and did alot of masking.

Next I pulled off each wheel and cleaned and sanded them down. I used duplicolor silver and they came out pretty good. For the cost of the paint and the time I think it is well worth the effort. Thinking about some brake sheilds to help keep these wheels clean.

The CD got the normal wash and vac out but still was real dirty. I hand buffed and waxed the car and it came out looking real nice. I am not a huge fan of its color but cleaned up it looks sharp.

Thats pretty much it for now. I need to get two rear tires and sort out the climate control. I will update this as I make more progress on the car.

Actually I like the color. Not all that common on a coupe.

My 77 non turbo 300 d too is peppy enough but the rear end ratio ratio is a little higher than I like. That can be changed if desired cheap enough.

Great story, those are some nice looking CD`s. the color on the 80 is not a common color I have seen a lot.

That is quite a Snow Job, did it blow in from Wash, DC?
