722.303 trans in a w123

Howdy, I'm hoping to help a friend out who has an older NA OM617 W123 wagon with a shot 722 auto trans. I have a 722.303 from a turbo diesel 617 300SD ( along with all the hardware and associated bits) and was wondering if it would be a straightforward swap into his car? Are there any size/bolt up issues? Control issues (linkage, vac etc)? Speedo issues?

I actually just did this swap. I have a W123 wagon that had a shot 722.3 trans so I bought a 722.3 SD trans as a temp. solution before I did a manual swap.

It will bolt right up with no hardware issues. The issue you will experience is if that SD transmission has the electronic speedo sensor, as it did in my case. The tailshaft is different between the geared speedos in the W123’s and the electronic ones in the same vintage SD’s. If it was from a 78-80 SD, there may not be an issue. But the 81-85 have IIRC an electronic speedo sensor.

A tailshaft swap could be a solution.

yup, electric speedo. I got a 722,309 from a 185 hp euro 280ce m110 that was also used in some SDs but its set up with the 123 style speedo signal driver.

Thanks! I was reading a bit about the same issue. I'm wondering how difficult a tail swap would be. It's too bad you couldn't just swap trans, cable, speedometers and all!

Can you advise on how difficult the tailshaft swap was?

There are threads on here that talk about the swap in general terms but no blow-by-blow accounts....

Thanks
