Grrr... my fuse box lid is not coming out (1984 W123 300D)

So I was using pliers to turn the black knob closer to the fender, and it turned all right... in fact, I turned it a whole lot until I saw that -- rats rats rats -- it hadn't moved a bit from the surface of the lid! Does this mean that my threads are stripped, and if so, what should I do?

Answer

The nut in the fuse panel may have broken the plastic, and be spinning.
A damaged fuse panel is not fun to replace.
If access is critical, break the cover.

Ohhh... that is exactly what it feels like. Rats...

So I hear.
If access is critical, break the cover.
I will have to do this. How/with what should I break the cover?
^Response within^

Thank you!

The body is going to the scrapper, so I don't care if it gets scratches/nicks/gouges... can I just use a crow bar to pop off the knobs?

I guess the W126 is light years ahead of the W123 in this regard, huh?

Use a hammer and pull the knobs off like pulling nails. If you can't get purchase under the knobs, knock them off with the hammer. If that doesn't work smash the cover by hitting around the edges.
