1972 mercedes 220D smoking under acceleration

1972 mercedes 220D Smoking under acceleration
I am looking to purchase a 72 220D however i am concerned about the excessive smoke it is putting out. The Smoke is a light blue/white smoke. It is billowing primarily during acceleration. If sitting at idle it will smoke slightly, not much. The car has been sitting for the past 15 years without being run. At some point before it was parked the engine was rebuilt. I have tried getting specifics but the current owner did not do the rebuild. Unfortunately when i was looking at the car i did not check the antifreeze to see if it had oil/bubbles in it.

Could it be moisture build up in the 15 year old fuel? Next time I look at it I plan to run a compression check on it. It fire up just fine.

Thanks!
Mark

I just reread your post and realized this isn't your car (yet). Make a big deal out of the smoke like the engine is toast. Pick it up for under a grand. Then if it does need a motor, you're still good. If it doesn't, you're still good.

Color description sounds like oil smoke. Could be bad rings, could be stuck (from 15 years of sitting) rings. Could also be a few other things, like a busted diaphragm in the vacuum modulator if it's an automatic, or an overfilled oil bath air cleaner if it has one.

I believe I have read a ruptured Diaphragm in the Vacuum Pump can also cause Oil to get into the Intake Manifold.

What you need to find out is why on Earth the Car Sat for 15 years after the Engine was rebuilt.

The below won't account for Blue Smoke but can cause Black Smoke.

And find out the exact scope of the "engine rebuild". I've seen engines called "rebuilt" that have never left the chassis. ( Head gasket , timing chain and so on. )

It is a 4 speed. in which case it is not the diaphragm in the vacuum modulator.

Probably the diaphragm in the vacuum pump or the injection pump. Could also be injection pump timing, but that prolly wont result in billowing amounts of smoke.
