What would you pay for a W124 235K?

Found what appears to be a really nice one (from the pictures anyway) for sale with the 2.5DT. Second owner for 3 years. Has maint records from first owner but he's not too familiar with any repairs. Interior appears great as does the original paint. What's the top end to pay for one with this mileage. How far do the 2.5DT's and auto trannies typically go when serviced?

I paid $3800 for my 91-300D 2.5. It had 240k on it when I bought it.

It also had:
-Redone front end
-Upgraded vacuum pump
-Upgraded Injection Pump

The downside:
-Ehhhh OK paint job
-Transmission threw a gear on the governor
-Turbo wastegate control failed

it's ALL about the service. I'd PULL the valve cover and inspect the timing chain gears. see if there is an oil change sticker on the window...
I got one with just over 300K on it, due to the chain snapping from lack of oil changes.
could be 5K, could be 350.00

I would pay $4k for a nice example. FYI my 92 with about the same mileage has original tranny in excellent condition....BUT, even as we speak, is having to get the head gasket replaced. Ug. You could use my story as leverage in your negotiations.

Also, plan on a leaking evaporator.

I've followed most of your threads on your W124 but missed that one. What was your resolution?

Will someone actually allow you to do that on a nice running example? I could see a non-runner or a beater, but not a nice one.

What do you suspect that to be a result of? I've not heard that to be a known problem on the 2.5.

Is the evaporator a pull the whole dash to R&R?

It's all about service, it may look gorgeous but it may have not seen an oil change in 10k or a gear oil change since it rolled off the line. Look over the maintenance records, if they reflect service up to the low 200s it may be fine....but if the second owner has done no maintenance for over 50k miles.....I would walk away from it...

I replaced the vacuum/computer controlled system with a simple pressure based wastegate actuator (~$40) off eBay then connected it to simple/cheap wastegate controller (~$10 ) and plumbed the the wastegate controller line into a port on the intake manifold.

It seems to be working just fine. I understand there might be (now) available the appropriate wastegate actuator (at the time it was not and) so that you don't need to use a controller..

My 124 has r134a..It leaked out over a period of 8 months maybe? I just threw another can down it and its been fine ever since. I am not sure if it leaked out because of a legitimate leak or because r134a can leak out of hoses and such (or something like that)...

-Idler/Tensioner Pulley
-Front Springs

I agree. If well serviced, what is a resonable expectation of miles for this model before major motor / tranny refresh would be needed?

Have no idea....car has never overheated under my ownership over last 110,000 miles. I have heard of this happening to others.

Evaporator is big job, pulling dash, something like 16 hours labor. Since I don't have the skills to do that, I used Cryoseal. Works great...going on five years....although now I have a compressor leak.

I don't know why not. you would have to bring a new valve cover gasket with you, as the new one will likely leak once you open it. its only 8 or so small bolts. and it'll let you see inside the intake crossover tube (expect it to be nearly closed off with oily gook) and then you can inspect the timing gears, and determine if gunk has collected around the rockers. if they are slimey, run away. anything but a nice metal coated with oil, and it's been poorly maintained. any wide spacing or sharp points on the gear teeth, and it's gonna need an overhaul...
