1983 300TD Mercedes-Benz question
Hello,
I just got a diesel car. Whenever, I go over uneven surface, I can hear humming noise(like wind chime, christmas bell). It may be present in general but may get drowned in other noise. I have to leave my foot over accelerator and let it glide over uneven surface ho hear. I hear from left side only. Also, is it normal that the car makes click click noise( balloon against bike tire, paper touching blades of table fan) when accelerating. Mechanic said it is normal because diesel engine are noisy? this is the video below. Noise while accelerating - YouTube Friendly folk at another forum suggested exhaust manifold for video above but mechanic confused me. Any ideas? I have 7 days experience owning any car. Thanks, |

It sounds like an exhaust leak upstream of the turbo. If you go the same speeds in a lower gear, does the audible tick occur at the same frequency or higher?

Check your exhaust manifold. I bet you find one of the tubes has blown out the gasket.

Guys,
I never owned a car and just got this Old mercedes-benz because my supervisor said they are built like tanks and run for ever. I was trying to read here and there and look videos at ************** to find out about this car. I have gasket manifold sitting in car which I inherited when I bought the car. So I think, he this was meant to solve the problem. Sleepstar, I cannot tell but if it is wheel bearing , can I fix myself? Also, my car makes loud squealing noise when AC is turned on. Squealing noise from drive belts - YouTube I noticed at some of the AC settings I can replicate but at others I cannot. I was told to try to rotate the belt connected to AC compressor , I tried, it moved/slid the belt a little bit but don't think it moved the compressor. The AC seemed to have worked before , took some time to cool down but not to extent to make it cold. Middle vents lack power, only side vents seems to have air pressure. The Belts in engine compartment going to the engine, have vert light cracks so not sure, if they need urgent attention or should be replaced soon. Also, my central UNLocking sometimes doesn't work. I noticed that the Y rubber hose going between I think green and yellow plastic like things have slight cracks( i think it was written 3339/2 on the rubber hose). I just got the air filter, oil and oil filter change. I asked about the lubrication of AC compressor to mechanic and freon in it, and any way to find out if we need to take care of this. The mechanic said no way without opening the car. I don't have much option but to drive the car with these issues as I have to commute to work but would like to take care of it so that it can last forever like you folk's car. I have not washed the car yet and if there any do/don't need to be done , please guide. I have noticed slight rust here and there. I have wd40 can here for my bike to remove rust. can I use that and any particular way to clean rust. Any guidance/ pointer to thread to clean the car and maintain will be appreciated. Sorry for bombarding with questions. Thank you again for guiding me. Dracs |

Thank you guys,
I replied yesterday but it didn't post. I have exhaust manifold sitting in car from previous owner. I looked at it and it exhaust manifold looked like black and worn out. That whole area is smeared with black greasy stuff. I have set up appointment with mechanic this saturday to have a look. The bell type noise( wind chime), I replicated in my parking lot and can hear coming from rear wheel behind driver side. It is audible only at low speeds and especially going over uneven surface. Is wheel bearing problem, i can fix myself. Also, when I turn on AC and at some settings, it start making this type of noise Squealing noise from drive belts - YouTube. I have tested AC before and it takes time to start cooling but do to some extent but didn't test it now. I tried moving the ac compressor while car was parked with the pulley cable but it slackened a little bit but ac compressor didn't move. I have also noticed that sometimes my central Unlocking doesn't work. Not all doors get unlocked. I was going through the vacuum lines and saw the Y shaped rubber hose between yellow and green plastic box is slightly cracked. Sorry, I don't know the exact technical terminology so being verbose. Any pointers will be appreciated. Thanks, Dracs |

How are your exhaust hangers? Could your exhaust possibly be rubbing on the drive shaft?

Sounds like a leaky exhaust manifold, first video.
Second seems you have a failing bearing, the A/C maybe. That "Y" or three way connector needs replacing.

The squeaky belt noise: Sounds and looks like a loose belt, try tightening the belt.

Thank you guys for replying,
Changing exhaust manifold is definitely on. The belts on engine have slight cracks on inner side, should i replace them? Is there way of telling if AC is gone bad/can be saved. I was testing it today it kinda blew luke warm air, It was on or 10 minutes. I read somewhere that if compressor has not gone bad, can be saved by putting oil in it and adding freon. I have used AC once before and it emitted slight cold air. I have looked at exhaust hangars, they are holding up fine but cracked so will need replacing but don't think they are touching anywhere. The Y connector will then be replaced. Any info that can avoid getting me ripped from mechanic will be appreciated. Thanks, Dracs |

Yes you will learn a ton here. I joined also as not to get ripped by a mechanic. Took mine in for an inspection and came out w/ a $3000 suggested repair bill. I paid $400 for the car. The major repairs were done parts and labor for under $400...yup stick around you will learn alot.
Most repairs you can do yourself. Dont ever let your mechanic (if u choose to go that way, but why?) keep your old parts, demand you get them back. most items can be rebuilt. Most of the rebuilds you can do (brakes, a/c brushes, a/c clima control unit, brake booster, vac leaks etc..) Welcome aboard! Dont let any of it shy you away. Squeeling noises usually = bearing noises a/c water pump alternator belts. First thing check your motor mounts get them fixed first. Check your flex disc, get them fixed second.

Thanks guys for motivation,
I am kind of laughing stock among peers for buying such an old car. ![]() ![]() I am not sure if it is the right approach but I have set up appointment with mechanic to look/do some stuff this weekend. I have only 1 car in household and use it to daily commute to work so a bit scared to open things on my own because of the fear that I will ruin something. I am also kind of feel anxious that by the time I learn, I may spoil the car. AM I being paranoid? I have found 1-2 mechanics here who work till 12.30 on Saturday. I see tutorials/videos but don't even have proper place to work here. My parking has a bit of slope and I stay in a apt. Do you guys keep stuff like vacuum pump, millimeters etc at home? I have external battery , tire presure gauge and mr fix it with me. I am going to get the estimate and let you guys know, how much does it cost and hopefully you can guide me better. Thanks for motivating. I did keep air filter but didn't keep the oil filter as it was oily. ![]() I have seen rust here and there, is there any suitable method to remove it and safeguard against it? I have can of WD 40 for rust protection which I bought long time ago for my bike? Thanks again, With Regards, Dracs PS: I am trying to learn the terms and google them. Sometimes, I don't know what exactly the part means so I tend to get verbose.
