what are the year differences in the 123 300TD?

Possibly looking for a 300TD 123 chassis for the fiance. She said she might be interested in a replacement 123 chassis diesel wagon for her 97 volvo wagon, since she "wants to get back to a diesel and loves the old wagons". Greatest words ever heard for a diesel addict.

I'm curious of the year differences, the most I know are the 2.88 diff in 85, the early non turbos (79-80?), and that's about it. Are there improvements/differences in the SLS? Are there specific years I should avoid in the chassis range? Is there a best year for automatic transmission?

As you can imagine I'm pretty psyched about this possibility.

Whooo boy. good questions all.

77-early 79, a/c was the york monster and the glow plugs were the old loop style needing conversion plugs to have fast glow.
mid 79 the a/c was changed to GMR4 but the plugs were not changed until late 79 to the pencil type
turbo was introduced in the 81 year vehicle, and at the same time it got the digital speedometer and 722.3xx transmission to handle the turbo, in 82 the trans got changed back to mechanical speedometer, but stayed the .3xx to handle the turbo. 83 the plastic fan was added for better cooling, but not the smaller wp pulley that the SD got the same year...
in 81 and up 123's the gear ratio was changed taller to better take advantage of the turbo's power, 3.07 for 81-84, and as mentioned 2.88 for the 85 year.
I'd like to find an 81, but I don't think it'd be better than an 84 from the updated standpoint.
85 I'd think would be the ideal year to buy. best power, and economy of all the years.

I have aleady given my sworn promise that any vehicle she chooses remains an automatic. (I did add the qualifier 'unless requested')

Rust free definitely, or as close as I can find. Criteria are things like transmission and engine work properly, a/c needs to work or needs to be reasonably fixable. Interior needs to be tan.
This would definitely be her car though, my role will be maintaining it and looking around for a good one.

Go up & get that one from Boston with the velour! I might be able to go check it out for you tomorrow... it would be a good excuse just to see the thing!

Oh, and PM me as to whether or not next Saturday works for picking up seats. I have been given clearance.

East coast car. Doesn't have a working drivetrain, but appears to be reasonably fixable ( ha!) and supposed rust free car that was posted a few weeks ago in benzworld.

Seems like your type of car. Maybe you can add in a six speed auto to feed your compulsive modification disorder!

Not much of what are the differences between the years, but my favorite models are first the 1983 model year and second the 1984 Federal ( not Cali). Mainly because I think they provided the best equipment in the most simplistic form. No funky vacuum system and electronics to fail.

Next Saturday is benzfest! I could do Sunday if that works though.

Is that boston one still up? Didn't come up recently

Lol, tempting but that was the other prohibited idea I forgot to mention. She wants to find a running car that she can immediately use, not a project for me to plan with endlessly. Almost direct quote there, I think the word "No" was in there a few times.

We may also have a partial trade idea as well. A family member wants the 97 wagon, and in return will buy it off us and give us an 89 volvo 240 wagon 5-speed. This we will either partially trade towards a 300TD, or just sell to add funds to our budget for a 300TD

Wow, that ford is rare! I had an 86 sedan escort diesel once. Before you buy for the kids, consider that its actually considerably slower than a VW 1.6 diesel NA. Like breakdown lane with flashers on with any sort of grade slow. But man, a wagon mazda diesel ford in that condition lasting all these years.

She definitely wants a 123 chassis wagon though

The Boston one is still available, though it is not on CL right now. I'll PM you the guy's phone # -- it turns out the car is in New Bedford, so it's actually not that far from you.

That Seattle Benz DeliveryValve linked to looks pretty nice and has the tan interior you were looking for. Seems to have a nice dash and clean engine.

A bit far from you though...
