Water Pump 1982 300d

Quick question.
so putting a new fan clutch and water pump in my 1982 300d.
is it enough to just use the gasket with that comes with the water
or do use use a gasket sealer also?
just want to be sure.

Clean the block surface so it's perfect. Just use the gasket, no sealer. Use a torque wrench and torque the bolts opposite of one another. First bring the bolts down to snug, then down to spec. No need for goop.

Pump to housing: 10Nm.
Fan to pump: 20-25 Nm.

Tango got it!

I remember it being pretty light.

I used a Graf pump and it came with a gasket. I didn't know it came with one, and I bought a seperate one. The pump one came folded in the box, and the other came in a bag on a piece of cardboard so it was flat. I used the flat one. It sealed great and doesn't leak at all.

mmk k
pump in
tightened bolts opposite each other.
two by twos
PO didnt have washers on all the fan bolts...off to lowes

question is.....

mind you i don't have a manual
where is the bolt to tighten alt water/fan/water belts
is it the really long hexagonal one that sticks out to the left?
seems like my belts were pretty loose to begin with
how much play should those two belts have...is there a rule of thumb
i know on the vanagon if you can baaaarely twist the belt you know its tight enough

hmmmm

No sealant required, but I usually use some on one side to hold the gasket. I like Gasket Sealant, which is alcohol based and stays soft. Comes in a small can w/ brush-cap and purple. Can also coat bolt threads with it. Do that if the bolt holes penetrate an oil or water cavity.

R&R'ed my alternator and as I remember, the alternator adjustment is what you are looking for.

Remember to loosen ALL the alternator bolts. This is not FSM but I tightened mine until there was >1/4" of give in the belt at its maximum between pulleys.
