w124 wagon rear hatch strut R&R

Hey man where have you all been? I know it's only been a year or 2 since I posted here...........
Anyway I have a 1987 TD wagon now and need some help with instructions on replacing the rear hatch cylinder struts. The back hatch will not stay up so I need to do this as soon as I can.
Thanks for the help.

The best place to look is the factory service manual, which MB has placed free online for the W124.

startekinfo.com, select workshop resources on the left, page through until you find 124 chassis manuals.

The struts are up under the headliner. PITA.

If its like the W123 don't use an air tool on the star bolt... It's soft metal.

Thank you Vstech! That is what I needed. Jay Bob I will go see what I can find on that site, it will probably come in very handy here soon for other projects...
I will update later when I get this done.

If you find it hard to remove the bolts on the inside of the car... The hatch is probably weighing down on that bolt... Have someone relieve the tension by raising the hatch until that bolt slides right out.

I don't remember any bolts inside the car... just metal tab to bend... unless you are talking about the pin that holds the arm on...

it's a pain in the Arse. dont bin your dust boots, your car will leak like a stuck swine. I've done it before. also be wary of the door. It weighs what feels like a quarter ton. and it huts like hell when it smashes into your arm.

Look Mom No Hands!!

Success! Excellent step by step write up. The back pins were rusted up pretty good and took a bit to get them out but HEY! the hatch stays up now!!
