Speedometer not working
ive been perusing the forum for speedometer repairs, i have not found any.
my speedometer is not working at all. is it typical for the cable or the speedometer itself to fail in these cars. i have a 1982 300d turbo diesel

If your speedo is sitting at 0 no matter how fast you're driving, it's probably the cable. It's not a very expensive part at takes about 15 minutes to replace.

Not sure on that. Doesn't seem likely to be the speedo cable if that's the case.
A friend's car, the white one in my signature, has the same problem. We are going to tear in to his speedometer soon to see if we can figure out what's wrong. There is a spring that returns the speedo to 0 when the cable stops turning. Our first guess is that perhaps this spring is broken/stuck.

Does the odometer work? If so then it is not the cable. If nothing works then I would guess it is the cable.
