2007 ML CDI funny cold start issues

I am fast approaching the 200 K mile mark on my trusty 2007 ML diesel and loving every mile.
But this winter a funny thing has happened 3 separate times when I leave the car outside overnite and the temp falls below 20 deg.
The engine will start fine and idle perfectly, but when I drive away the car feels very sluggish. It will not drive over 2000 rpms, the trans wont shift above 4th gear and the kick down switch on the accelerator doesn't work at all. I must use the paddle shifters to get up into higher gears and highway speeds.
Then, when the car is fully warmed up and I stop and restart all issues disappear and driving is back to normal- full power and kick down trans working.
Am I experiencing " limp home mode" or something?
No CE lights go on.
I have been parking it in the garage overnites now and no issues.
Any insight would be appreciated.
thanks
jz
