Arrow Correct oil advice. 2005 CDI

I just bought an '05 CDI (OM642) and the manual so far does not provide what I need to learn. I don't know when the last oil change was done so I need to do that ASAP.
Based on what I have found so far, I only see MB 229,51 or MB 228.31 and also based on that people speak of Mobil 1 0W-40
My question is basically this, I can not find a (turbo diesel) Mobil 1 0W-40, only the regular fully synthetic Mobil 1 0W-40 that is used in gasoline engines.
Is that what people are using on their OM642 when they mention Mobil 1 0W-40?
I have ordered the parts (filters and such) for this and the transmission fluid change but I need to buy the oil hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

Try turning the key one click and then press the reset button 3 times in a row to find out how much time is left on this oil change.

MB spec 229.51 is indeed correct for an OM642 engine..... but if you've purchased an 05 CDI you don't have an OM642 engine, unless someone has performed a very sophisticated engine swap you have an OM648 inline 6 cylinder engine.

The MB spec for that engine is 229.5 and Mobil1 0-40W European Formula oil is readily available and carries the 229.5 spec.

The 229.51 spec is for 07+ CDI V6 Diesels that use particulate traps.

There are no separate gas vs diesel specs - as long as the candidate oil carries the 229.5 spec you're fine.

LOL, my mistake, no engine swap... yeah 648
Thanks. I never put other than diesel oil in my diesel engines so I was afraid to do that.

Understand the concern well , now go swing by Walmart and pick up 10 quarts of 0w-40 for $50!

Maybe, maybe not on the car needing an oil change. It depends on the availability of reliable records the car might have.......

I hate to carp on this with you, but your Carfax and the VMI obtained from any MB dealer, would show the maintenance schedule your car has undergone. IF, the information was properly entered, and or IF the maintenance was done @ MB dealers.

Where I'm coming from is that the 06 CDI I purchased from an MB dealer had ALL the maintenance AND repairs, tires, etc. done AT MB dealers, so, there was a complete forensic, and contemporaneous trail to follow on my used car before I even agreed to buy it, or come to terms on a price.

IF you can procure either a Carfax, VMI, preferably BOTH on the car, you may learn a lot about the car's servicing - or maybe NONE at all.

In the many, many, E320 CDI & Bluetecs I shopped over the Internet, I DID notice that there were a few that had NO discernible trail of history to follow on the cars, as per Carfax. What WAS totally transparent was the trail from the VMI provided by an MB dealer.

The oil choice deal was covered by others above.......

Going a bit off on a tangent here....

Going a bit off on a tangent here....

Carfax = not a reliable indicator of dealer servicing history. The carfax report for the w210 I just bought shows minimal servicing records, yet I have a large stack of MB Dealer invoices for the car. I guess some dealers don't report the info. Just an FYI.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming....

0w40 is not critical.
I think the best oil for protection is Mobil 1 5w40 ESP Formula M (MB229.51).
But you can also use Mobil 1 TDT 5w40 even though it was not MB approved. Several have used it with high success.

Pentosin High Performance II 5w40: made in Germany, meets newest Euro oil specifications

Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 5w40: Castrol's highest performing diesel motor oil

I am a big fan of Pentosin HP II. It's a very good oil, but not readily available in common parts stores.

I gave up buying oil in the parts stores years ago.

Modern diesels need the correct ( special ) oil. It's required. Not useing the correct oil just because it's not at the store down the road is a poor excuse.

It's 2014. You can buy damn near anything you want online.

I've been dealing with this since 2002 and my VW TDI. Couldn't get yeah right oil ( or filter) at any parts store. Back then even most dealers would have to order it.

So I'm all about "oil change kits" from reputiable web sites. I get the correct oil for my car, high quality filters and away I go.

Luckily my local parts store can get HP II. No need for me to order online for that one.

All great info, many thanks!!!
Car fax shows stuff only as far as under 50K miles (done at MB dealers)
I bought a brand new left over Tundra in Jan 2013. I am just about done with the "free oil changes" which extend to 25K miles. Even though I purchased the 125K mile warranty on it, once the freebies are done, I'll be doing my oil changes and keeping my own records. That doesn't mean the truck will be neglected, quite the contrary, but car fax won't have much to report to the next owner.

As far as the Benz goes, I made an appointment to take it to my local MB dealer this coming Friday for wheel alignment ($215) and then from there it will only see the service dealer on very special occasions if at all.
Funny story tho, just found out that a good friend from my high school years works at that dealer as a technician so it may be a win win for me.

Also was able to find the previous (and only) owner in the navi, (home address) 5 minutes away from where I purchased the car. I will see if I can talk to the dealer and see if they can get some info for me on the car. My wife already told me not to even think about stalking them lol
