1985 300D rear-ended:(

I got hit hard enough to put a small divot in the bumper & right side is pushed in a bit. The whole bumper is loose enough to be wiggled by hand, but the body is rusty enough back there as to require extensive sheet metal work anyway.
The irony is that I had just put on my 2-year registration stickers, not 1/2 hour prior, so I am committed to keeping it that long to get my money's worth out of this car. maybe.

Does the bumper shock need to be replaced once it is pushed in, or can it be pulled back out?

I don't know if they can be pulled out, but if you need bumper shocks, I have several bumpers worth of them in Worcester, MA. Full bumpers, too, though none of them pristine.

Newport dog park. I know the guy & he's got some troubles so I'm letting it slide, even though it sets me back another step if I decide to fix up the car all pretty.

only the bumper is pushed in? easy fix. I misred first and was thinking the rear quarter was pushed in.

your 5mph shocks did their job

bet you the bumper was already hanging on the shocks in the first place, missing that lower piece of aluminum

Hydro-pnuematic shocks can generally be reused. Compression types are one use as they deform when hit.

I don't know what type you have. ( Google GM bumper shock from the 70'S for the hydro type )

Our cars seem to get rearended an awful lot. I wonder if it's the lack of a third brake light.

One of the few modifications I'm making to my project 240D is adding a 3rd brake light from a W124, for exactly this reason.

It also helps if you are not high on perscription pain meds

Judging from the condition of the front end of his Toyota, he's been making a habit of it. Personally, I give it a month before he hits the wrong person & the cops are called.

thats what I don't get: we were going to the same place, like we do every day. When I braked to turn into the parking area, he was following too close & ran right into me. I know he's broke & out of work, so I shrugged it off.

a couple of fresh bumper shocks will fix most of it & I may do so this summer when I remove the entire mess for some much needed rust repair.

As in with a vaild scrip or from the street corner? If the latter no wonder his life is screwed up. In any event it is only a matter of time before he does something far worse than a parking lot oops. ( like plow into a crowd of people. )

Even if he has a valid scrip, someone need to get this guy under control.

My guess is both: he worked as a mechanic before being fired for going to hospital following a workplace accident involving a wheel bearing, sledgehammer & pinky finger. Boss hadn't been paying his Workman's comp...both sides lawyered up. Guy's character is being called into question-apparently he's no stranger to the courts in RI. This won't end well for either party. He's been through several jobs recently and I wouldn't be suprised if he was showing up stoned.

I won't miss him if he gets locked up- he feeds the dogs treats @ the park despite many people asking him repeatedly to stop- whenever he shows up there is instantly a pack of friends surrounding him, following wherever he goes.
I usually just leave when problem people or dogs show up. I did PM the curator of the parks FB page to spread the word on the DL, and she echoed my concerns.

Take the offer of good used shocks, they are sacrificial = one shot.
