I sure can, when I run out there today....I will grab the part number for you.

Thanks! I kept finding rust and was getting worried I would stumble upon a bunch of pin holes or a huge hole....but amazingly it was all solid under the rust...I am really surprised by that!

I was thinking of using a solvent....but that would be so messy...so I just used a gasket scrapper, bent a tad and a dremel to keep it nice and sharp....it was a PITA to do....but it worked great.....If I do it again, I believe I would use an electric scrapper....will cause less blisters and fewer days.

Most likely I will be doing this same thing to my 78 eventually. Its really a great thing to do every 30 years....so much dust and dirt builds up in the carpet and insulation....it really is a good thing to do...especially cleaning out the heater core...you can see all the crap that was in it....this will hold moister, eventually causing the core to rot and causing nasty smells in the cabin.

Nice job, man, thats quite a project but you'll really enjoy driving that car when your done. It looks like it might the same "Russet" brown as my euro 240D. Some folks are down on brown cars, but like the color. keep up the good work.

I am rebuilding a 1965 VW Beetle, a complete frame off restoration. The reason why I mention this is because some ppl with $$$ use DynamatŪ for sound and heat insulation. Being that the engine is in the rear and with such a small space, the old aircooled beetles are not known for being quiet cars but with today's technology in sound and heat insulation you can somewhat beat the issue.
Anyhow, HomeDepot sells a roofing flashing material that is called quick roof, comes in a roll. It is basically a peel and stick material that has the same properties of the DynamatŪ but it will be be cents on the dollar. I am using it to do my beetle's entire interior including the roof.
Check it out HERE

I have read about this. The one problem with it, was people were afraid in the heat it would heat up causing a tar smell in the car.

I will be getting a roll of this to help the dampening effect, then I will go over it with the insulation and taping all seems to eliminate the small that might arise..

For what it's worth, I did the entire floor of a 1981 240D with that Home Depot peel and stick roofing stuff (a 1990 VW Jetta, too) back in 2008 after I did some floor patching and had to remove the original material.
  1. I installed the peel and stick stuff in spring
  2. I drove that car through the spring, summer, and through to the next year when I sold it
  3. The car was not noticeably louder than stock when using this stuff
  4. Despite the summer heat (well, as hot as it gets in Massachusetts...), I noticed NO ODOR coming off this stuff
  5. Despite lack of odor, I can't guarantee it wasn't giving off some sort of harmful chemical
  6. I used this stuff BEFORE I ever heard of potential dangers
  7. I'm not convinced that it's harmful, but have heard enough to think twice about using it again
  8. For my current project, I may use bedliner in the car instead

interesting......never thought of harmful odors....whats your feeling if it was sealed in the car? I imagine the mercedes stuff was just as harmful....I thought of that after I finished and got a case of the chills, light headed and sore head....better now...

Well, my car was closed and locked when I wasn't driving it. Logically, that was most of the time. Once again, I never noticed anything. But, was there anything noxious I COULDN'T smell? I just don't know.

Bottom line, between two cars, I drove around with that stuff coating my floorboards (I used enough, and sealed it down as best I could with a heat gun, to act as a moisture barrier) for over a year.

I don't know if there was anything harmful. I doubt it, but can't prove it.

Another problem, as I've heard, is that the Home Depot stuff will get brittle and come up in sheets after a year or two. Another thing I assume you'd need to consider is that you're in Arizona. If I'm not mistaken, you'd be dealing with a lot more heat, overall, than I'd see in Massachusetts. That certainly wouldn't help if the peel-and-stick stuff reacts to heat.

Not trying to scare you off from it, but everything I've read in recent years says that this stuff, despite visual similarities, really is not the same as Dynamat.

Knowing what I know now, I'm probably going to bedliner my floors once complete.

Oh your not scaring me off....I was actually hoping to hear from someone who used this stuff....because like you say here we have some pretty warm days in the summer. I was thinking of just using the duct insulation on the floor.....but then was looking at the peel n stick roofing because I would hate to reinstall everything just to find out there isn't enough damping from just the insulation. Bed liner is an excellent choice....but looking at the stuff here at the parts store....its not to cheap....was even thinking of using rubber undercoating.....will see when I get to the depo I suppose...

I really don't think there would be too much of a price differential between bedliner and the peel and stick stuff. But, it's been a while since I looked at the prices.

I had an awesome time yesterday, busy but fun!

I first went to a junkyard and got the headliner, parcel tray, battery box. I then went to the another junkyard, that had a pristine 1982 w126 300d. it had mine grey leather interior, seated heats with orthopedic inserts....try to get them but they were riveted in and sewn into the seat skins. I got the heat switches....figure I could use them with an after market heating pads and the mint becker 612 radio...I then went to the guys house and loaded up the car with everything else....all the windows came out with out a hitch. I went to put the screw driver between the frame and gasket to work the windshield out...then crack....went all the way down....i looked and it was an aftermarket windshield and a very thin one....totally made me upset. I think I got a good deal but I ended up spending all my monies...the first junk yard i got everything for 20$, second junk yard was 40$ and i gave the guy a hundred....plus fuel to and from was about 110$....so in total I spent about 300$.....but I got a huge load of parts. Heres a list.

Pulled the sunroof out! Damn that thing is heavy don't ask me how I will get it back in by myself. Looks like I am missing one felt pad....I see no signs water leaking in....so I am undecided if I want to install new seals or not.

Congratulations on getting your car back! You are putting in a bit of blood and sweat as well!

FWIW, I used the EZ-Cool stuff for insulation on my project (lobucrod.com), and though it is a different application, I used it with double-sided duct tape on the inside of the door skin, and it would be nice above your headliner for the AZ heat. It's radiant insulative properties are pretty amazing, but it's sound dampening is all around 1000Hz (Higher pitched road noise), and it doesn't have much low end sound dampening like the mat.

Myself, I would try to find the cheapest butyl product you can find for the floors vs tar...

Well been taking a break for a few days, I did finish up the heater box, go it reassembled. I am now working on fixing the broken housing for the controls. Attempting to find a glue to hold it all together so that way I can fabricated metal plates to reinforce the cracked areas. I need a new cutting disc for the dremel so I just glued it together. I did get the fresh air flap cable un froze but it later broke on me because the rust ate a good portion of the cable away.

Waiting on more funds to get insulation to move onto more re assembling. I think this week I will work on recovering some of the interior bits, cleaning the seat fabric, working on the door card and maybe get some of the doors put back together.
