I both rent out the official Klann spring compressor that FITS in the W123 perch hole, AND I have 300D front springs sitting on my shelf...
but I'm in NC... and shipping may well exceed the cost of new items in your area.

lemme know if you need them.

If no one suggested it yet, consider replacing both front coils with a matched set. It might be time for new spring pads too.

The W123 has incredible build variation in the hole sheet metal stack alignment.
I have worked on many hundreds of these, where it was impossible to fit the factory spring compressor through this hole.

That is a great price, don`t think I have seen on this cheap in price.
Usually they are close to $200 and shipping added.

Thanks very much for the offer vstech, but I am unfortunately a fair weather only wrencher, gonna have to pay a local shop a couple hundred now.

If I had 9 lives, I spent them all this morning because it's all highway between my
Lane way and my work! Having that blow at highway speeds would have been unpleasant

it's a 15 minute job to toss in a set of springs with the correct tool, and it's SUPREMELY UNSAFE to do it without the proper tool...

even if you don't wanna do it yourself, I have the springs for ya if you want em.

Good work. If me, I would have jacked up the frame, slipped a 2x4 in place of the spring and driven slowly home (<15 mph). The thick tires would provide enough cushion, and the ride probably wouldn't be much worse than all the new cars w/ rubber-band tires. Kind of amazing that these springs break when the car is stationary, but you aren't the first who has come outside to find "spring shrapnel" around the front.

rear springs maybe. Front springs, I totally disagree.

Id say it took a couple hours for me, most of which was getting the tool jammed in the curved spring after relieving pressure on the tool, took a floor jack and 3 foot pry bar in the spring coil to change the curve to get the spring compressor plates out.

Its at such an angle inside the curve of the spring, that it could be big trouble

Where is that cool pic where another poster combined 2 hole saws to widen the hole?

I forgot where I saw it and what size he/she used.

were they lowering springs though?

I think the time estimate to do the job can be dramatic different based on how long, and how curved the spring ends up being. I put over tall springs in my 240, and it was a pretty miserable experience, but when I had reinstalled the broken spring that was 4 inches shorter, it flew in there in no time.

W140 springs = hell no

They came out as stock with 4 burl springs pads, and went back in with 1.5 less coils and no pads.

I have removed, and installed hundreds of front springs on 123's the Klann spring tool makes it a very simple quick job. and since the spring is already out of his car, it's not a long process at all to install a good spring.

car exploded in parking lot

I once had to r&I springs on a pastors car a 300sd. y'kno, so i went to the metal yard where they sell scrap back to you.

I was (blessed) to find two flat circular pieces a long threaded rod, and the nuts required.

used vise grips on the socket. very safe while i was 30 feet from it. it slowly spun loose by itself relaxing the tension (control arm removed) took all the fear outta me.

just had to recompress it and install the other arm.

now you guys have me wondering if the springs have snapped yet. he traded it sometime after
