Howdy

Just registered and wanted to say Hi and also thanks for all the info I've already picked up while lurking. As you might guess from my user name, I'm in the process of doing a swap, 85 Cali 300td into 84 Toyota 4runner. I have the donor car already, have ordered the swap kit from TDSwaps, and can't wait to get them married up. This is my first diesel, though my dad was a long haul owner operator, so some of my first memories are of handing the (wrong) wrench to him as he worked on his old Cornbinder. I love my 84 Runner, but not the early 22r engine, so I am really looking forward to having some good old German muscle under the hood. My wrenching and driving history for the last 35 years was mostly aircooled 356s and VWs, so I appreciate German engineering. The water part is a bit odd, but I'm getting used to it )

Sounds like a cool project! Are you planning on tuning the motor at all or leaving it stock?

I live in CA; does the DMV allow this sort of Engine swap; or is it stricely an off the Road Vehicle?

I plan to do some mods, especially since it is a Cali 85 model motor. So definitely plan to adjust the pump for more fuel before boost, and either install a 'test pipe' to delete the trap ox, or switch to the whole federal intake/exhaust setup. And will probably go with some type of 3" exhaust. The motor already has more power than the 22r it's replacing (90ish hp), and my main goals are longevity, tractability, and fuel mileage.

This is my daily driver/pargliding retrieval /snow skiing/ghostowning/work vehicle
so it definitely is street registered. Currently in California it is my understanding that the conversion is legal as long as the donor engine is the same year or newer than the vehicle it is going into, and it has all of the factory dingleberries. It may or may not need to be seen by a smog ref, depending on your luck. Once it is oked and the motive power is changed on the title, it never needs another smog check. I plan to keep everyone posted on how this goes for me. I plan to install it as close to stock Mercedes as possible until I get all the paperwork signed off.

Welcome! I always thought the 22r motor was one of the best Toyota engines. I enjoyed the 22re anyway in my 95 Yota PU.

Welcome to the Forum. We are somewhat close neighbors.

Read through Mach4 Diesel engine engine swap into his 85 380SL. He got it through the DMV, CARB, EPA and what ever agencies hoops he had to jump through. As I remember it was easy.

Locate a pair of manifolds off a 78 or 79 300SD as they do not have the EGR mounting cast into them. They are hard to find, but come up in the local PNP`s every once in a while.

The 85 engine has the smaller 34mm crank hole compared to all the prior years of MB Diesels. so a stock Pilot bearing will not work. You will need to have a Bushing made. Iam in that pickle now with an 85 Crank.

I am planning to sell it, as I (hopefully) have no further use for it.

You are correct, and the later 22re is the best. I unfortunately have an early 22r which uses a different block and head, among other things. It is the least powerful and gets poor mileage. It is getting harder to find good cores, and I made the mistake of getting an exchange rebuild a few years ago from a 'reputable builder'. Factory engines are great, rebuilts are iffy unless you do it yourself or pay a lot to have it done (as with any engine). I also travel to high altitude for paragliding and snow skiing, and am looking forward to having a turbo.

Hi Charlie, was hoping you might chime in . We may have actually met once, when I was outside the diner in Moss landing with a dead battery,on my way to Laguna Seca? A nice gentleman came over to see if I needed any help and mentioned that he owned 5 of these beasts. I was of course not in the best mood and not as friendly as I should have been .

Thanks for the reminder, I had seen that thread in the past, but didn't see the final resolution.

That's probably what I will end up doing eventually, let me know if you run across one!

Yep, am aware of that. The flywheel adapter that comes in the kit should take care of it, though Brian from TDSwaps didn't have one in stock at the time I placed my order. If he doesn't get any of the 85 versions in, I will just have the normal one he sells turned down.

Thanks, Cliff

Cliff -I think that was me in front of the Moss Landing Cafe. If I remember correctly you had another passenger or two. I travel to Moss Landing frequently and eat at the Moss Landing Cafe while staying in my RV at the Moss Landing KOA.

Hey Bill, you must be right, lol. I recall that you came over from an RV, I think. Yes, I did have a couple of friends along, it was the MBs 'maiden voyage' of over 10 miles, and of course it died after breakfast , while in a hurry to get to the track. Never had a hint of a problem driving it around home by myself, lol. Ended up replacing the battery, then the starter, and later the alternator. Get in touch next time you're in the area, I'll buy you breakfast!

Thanks, Cliff

Kinda sad to take the heart out of a td assuming wagon and stuff it in a toyato...and wagons are rare...plus go for a good penny....then doing the conversion...you have to do something about the sls pump too....

My Wife and I ate at Gayles probably 10 yrs ago. have bought their pastries a few times. We eat at the little restaurant around the corner from time to time, think it is the Cook House.

We live about 4 or 5 miles from there.

You mention Moss Landing, have you eaten at "Phils Fish market"?
