Anyone around Raleigh NC

Anyone around Raleigh NC happen to have a w124 differential mount tool I can rent/ borrow? I am changing the diff. mounts on my 1987 wagon.

I was hoping I could do this job with the old redneck engineering techniques but this does not seem to be the case, at least for the moment.

Send me an email or PM if you want. I'll keep checking here also.
Thank you for the help!

it's fairly easy with a C-style press and sockets... there's a thread on it around here somewhere.

Yea I have a ball joint press and a 46mm socket but the fuel tank is located right behind the differential on the wagon. not enough clearance. I was trying to use a threaded rod with the 46mm socket and some disks from some old shock absorbers but the old mounts would not move. I may run into Raleigh and see what harbor freight has that might/kindof/sortof work for this. I hate to spend $100.00 for a one time use tool.

you could always drop the subframe, it's not much more work...

I had not thought of that. I guess when all else falls, go the distance. Sounds better than dropping the full fuel tank.

remember to take loose the sls rams, the swaybar links, and the calipers so the brake hoses don't fail first...

putting it all back up will require assistance, and a good floor jack, with a chunk of large wood to spread the load... you will need a philliips screwdriver to align the holes in the sls ram ball joints...

I'm in Wilmington but I don't have the tool. So I meet half the requirements.

Drop the subframe and replace all the rubber at once that is any where close to worn. It's worth the time and money. No special tools needed. There are also DIY's on doing front or rears without fully dropping the subframe.

Well that tears it! I was planning one getting some new parts this week anyway so I guess I'll just refresh the subframe mounts etc. I think this "little" project just got better, or uh bigger. Now does anyone have a good source for an inexpensive used hydraulic shock? My left side has a leak.

I would plan on going whole hog and fix up the back end if you can.

It made a world of difference on my car. It drives like new now.

Either vstech or I can share many lessons learned on this.

Well I've increased the value of the old wagon by a little more than a $1,000.00 in parts. 2 more deliveries and all the parts will be here for the chassis rebuild and then some. I found a pair of rear hydraulic shocks to refresh the old ones and bought new bilsteins for the front as well. I already replaced most of the front except some sway bar bushings.
This should be fun er interesting, I've rebuilt a w126 chassis but this w124 has a few more components.
Piece of cake right.

My wife hates it when I do that. Actually storing the parts in the living room is the issue. I tried to convince her to sell the coffee table and just use a parts box. Coffee table was her Grandmother's. That strategy didn't work but we're still married.

Has me laughing.

There is always a need for end tables!

The solution is obvious and very much in your favor. Explain that you need a shop. Something like my 30x40 (that's feet not meters though that has me thinkin'). Then all the boxes can go there when they arrive.

Junk man, store them under the bed, she'll never know.

As for a garage/ shop- I have an increasing size oil spot in my driveway, one of these days I'll build some walls around it and a roof over top and call it done.......
