1987 190D won't start
Car wasn't shutting off so we used the Stop lever on the side of the fuel pump with a screwdriver to shut off the engine after turning off the ignition / key.
This worked until today when the car failed to start and while cranking the engine we heard a buzzing sound from the area of the vacuum shut off unit atop the fuel pump. Engine turned over but would not fire up. Juice in the battery and plenty of fuel. |

The stop lever appeared to be working, dropping down when the key was turned off, then further depressed with a screwdriver to kill the engine.
Did the same thing yesterday, conducted our business and went to restart the car and with the engine turning over but failing to "fire". We heard the buzzing sound from the fuel pump area each time we engaged the ignition key. Anyone with similar experience? |

So, seems to me the shut off valve is shot, why not just replace it? Then the car will start and shut off correctly.

Thanks.
Will a defective shut off valve prevent starting the car? |

I don't think it will hurt, and in the process you'd deal with the linkage too, lube up every joint on that, something's clearly stuck, telling the engine to keep the fuel shut off.

Buzzing could be faulty pre-glow relay? No glow plugs glowing, no engine starting? Do you smell raw diesel fuel in the exhaust while cranking? You could also crack open one of the injection hard lines to see if fuel weeps out while cranking.
