'82 240D needs new engine- Which do I/ can I use?
I am happy to join your forum, but sorry that the demise of my beloved 240 D has driven me here.
I loaned the car to a cute girl for a few weeks after she wrecked hers. (You can chide me for that after you share your expert advice.) She promised to check the oil weekly and add if needed. After several weeks I got a panicked call- the car was on fire. I was out of town and felt helpless. But she got to a safe distance and called the fire dept., I had the car towed home, and expected the worse. Upon returning home I did not find a charred hull of what was once a beautiful car, but I did find a piston and rod outside of the engine. So the car has the potential to drive again. But an engine rebuild is not an option. How do I best repair my 1982 240D w/ 228k and a hole in the engine block? (I know of 2 options and welcome your input and help seeing other options) 1. Replace with engine from '79 300D w/153k. I own this car - it has lots of body rust and transmission slips, but engine starts easily and runs smoothly. Its previous maintenance is unknown. (Can this be done?) 2. Replace with engine from a '82 240D w/180k available for $700. Car has no transmission. Its previous maintenance is unknown. 3. Do you have a better option? I am in Johnson City, TN. (423 383 1240) I am handy, can follow instructions, and my father has an engine lift- but at present the task of switching the engines feels overwhelming and my plan is to let a local shop switch the motors for 960.00. With Thanks! Brad |
