Shifting and Trans Questions

1982 300D

Have a few questions on my 300D. For starters I am going to replace the transmission fluid and filter within next week or so but have noticed some things and not sure if they are normal or not and just wanted to check and see if while I have fluid and filter out maybe there is more I should be looking for or do.

First is when I shift from Park into either drive or reverse it seems to take a few seconds before the transmission actually goes into gear. Curious if this could be a vacuum related issue or shifter bushings. Has done this pretty much since I have owned the car just hadn't been to concerned and had more important things to take care of first. Any other ideas would be great.

Second is that when it does go into drive or reverse it seems to kinda jump or shake the car. It doens't clunk or anything. More of a shake of the car. I just replaced the motor mounts and the transmission rear mount. Any other ideas what could be causing this.

Overall the car shifts just fine. Every once in a while when its cold it will flare between 1st and 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. But it doens't do that often and when it does it seems to be more so when I am having a vacuum related issue. Like when I unlock my doors start it and drive and the back locks still havent unlocked or if I have EC selected for heating and its not blowing yet due to lack of vacuum to switch the pods on or whatever it does in there. Sorry probably should be some seperate threads but just looking for some info.

Thanks

What Mileage is on the Odometer?

The approximate number of seconds before it goes into First Gear?

Some hesitation going from park to drive is relatively normal on an old Transmission. Could it be a B2 Piston Seal issue of B2 Piston issue will not be known until the Piston Fails.
The B2 Piston and related parts are accessed from the outside of the Transmission.

There is no sort of adjustment you can fool with when you change the Filter.
There is Spring Kits to try to correct some shift issues but I believe that is after the Pressures have been checked and re-adjusted to see if that corrects the issue.

The condition of your Transmission sounds better than mine.

On mine it is the reverse that has the delay and slightly harsh shift. On the older Transmissions there was an External Band Adjustment that could help that some. I have not read of any way to adjust the Reverse Band on the 722.315 Transmissions. If there is a way maybe someone will chime in.

I have not ever checked the Pump Working Pressure or the Modulated Pressure on My Transmission.

The Flaring can be a Vacuum issue and what position the Accelerator Pedal is in changes the Vacuum going to the Transmission Modulator.

When I first became a Member of the Forum I read to use Lucas Transmission Sealer Conditioner. But, that recommendation seems to have faded in popularity.
In My case it helped and also reduced the leakage from the seals. It is unknow if it will help in your case.
To me the Lucas Stuff reminded me of STP but pink. So I am thinking that just like STP increases the viscoisty in Engine Oil I believe it increases the viscosity of the Transmission Fluid. Thicker Fluid would raise the pressures and at the same time decrease leakage. I don't know if that is what it really does.

Make sure you used lemforder or phoenix brand mounts..

check the bushings, easy to inspect and change.

confirm your fluid is right between the lower and upper line, check it as soon as the car is at operating temp and idling in park.

The odometer reads 179,000. Which is pretty accurate I would guess have noticed every once in a while it stops working but its not for long. Not sure if or when the fluid and filter has been changed. I bought the car with 172,000 on it. The fluid level is between the lines and appears to be in ok condition.

I just timed it this morning and it took 3 seconds from park to reverse and then about 2 from reverse to drive. Not sure what brand the mounts were I will have to look.

Thanks for the info

Just checked and the transmission mount was a Meyle mount and the engine mounts are URO. Guess I will be asking for replacement mounts already after a month cause it looks like the engine mounts have collapsed already. I will try to upgrade to the lemfoerder.

That is the issue with uro mounts, they hold up fine...they just collapse and don't help cut down vibrations...believe the rubber is to soft...
