Is motorcycle gear oil suitable for a 300d diff?

I am looking at Lucas synthetic 75w140, but it's labelled as "motorcycle gear oil."

Just want to check. Want to use it in my '85.

No you should use a 75w90 gear oil. Or the special MB 75w85 from the dealer.

Hey, why not. All you can wreck is the differential. Just kidding, I think it would work fine. I use Mobil 1 SAE 75 gear lube. I think it only takes a quart.

Not sure if it would hurt anything. But motorcycle gear oil is formulated not just to lubricate gears but also to play nicely with wet clutches. So it's probably, in my laymen understanding, similar in formulation to limited slip oil that is designed to work with the clutches in an LSD diff. You wouldn't use an LSD gear oil in your regular diff so I'd imagine you'd not want to use this motorcycle oil either.

A synthetic 75w90 as mentioned is ideal.

I use Amsoil 75/110 in my signature car and it works fine.

Ok that is what I was after.

Thanks.

MC gear oil should work but 75/140 is probably too high a viscosity

Most manufacturers are leaning towards less viscous lubricants these days for the sake of economy. Witness the fact that manual gearboxes now generally require ATF as a lubricant instead of the previous standard of gear oil. A differential has helical gears in it which means that EP rated gear oil is required due to the angular thrust of the gear teeth towards each other. I would say that a suitable weight of motorcycle gear oil in a diff would be fine but 75 - 140 is too thick in my opinion. All that happens if you use a thicker than necessary lubricant is that there is more heat generated by the shearing action of the gears passing through the fluid. It just overheats the lubricant and the heat breaks it down. Cheers Dan
