Window stutter
What causes the electric windows to stutter (no, the windows don't talk to me. Those voices are purely in my head!) when putting them up and down and will the window regulator kit fix this problem?
Both my rear windows do it and the driver's side actually leaves a small gap at the top that I have to push up to get it to seal, then I have to pull it down in order for it to work again. Product Information: 123-720-01-14-M22

This is on your '84 300TD?
Normally, this symptom is caused by bent window regulators. ![]() That's supposed to be straight, not angled outwards like that. Unfortunately the regulator frame was not made of the toughest stuff, basically pot metal, so over 30 years they have bent out of shape with the up/down force from the rather strong window motor. What's happening is that the teeth on the motor gear are misaligned and chattering against the teeth on the regulator gear. Eventually, a tooth or three break off or they just get worn down which is when they stop working entirely. Not too familiar with the window regulator kit. But I think it just includes parts to replace the plastic bushings and glides. If I'm correct, no this won't help. What you can try and do is bend the regulator back in to shape. Once bent, metal is then weaker and more likely to bend again, but it will last a while. If you're really handy, some have also bent them back and then welded on a reinforcing plate on the back side. That would be a permanent fix. Here are two guides I created on how to 1) remove the door panel 2) remove the regulator and 3) bend it back in to relatively the correct shape. It talks about the rear doors, but the front are pretty similar. They are mounted just slightly differently, you don't have to move the window rail out of the way, and you don't have to disassemble a switch like you do on the rear. Try spraying silicone lube down the sides of the window channels. I recall that worked for me. If not, pull the door card off and see what is going on. When the driver's door window was making a clunking sound, I found the lower mount bolt was loose. Easy fix.

Thank you uberwasser!
Great write up on how to fix it. Do you know if the regulators in a TD are the same with the D model in the event that they look worse than the one in your post? I want to say that they are not, but I am not sure. Thank you Bill, I think you are right, I need to pull the panel off and watch it all in action and see where I stand.

Looks like different part numbers in the EPC between the TD and sedan.
I know some might disagree but I'd say, pull the panels and pull the regulators to check them all. When your windows work, pulling the regulators is easy. It's when they are stuck up that is more tricky - but still not hard really. Even if you pull them and find them OK, it gives you a chance to clean and grease them which they're probably in need of after all these years.

The price on the Rear Window Regulators has more then doubled since I wrote this thread (thread not for everyone).
Extreme Window Regulator Repair Extreme Rear Window Regulator Repair,123 - PeachParts Mercedes ShopForum Over on Benzworld someone had a threads on using W126 Rear Regulators. For some reason on the Car they do not get bent up like the W123s do and you can find some good used ones. Added; I found the thread: Using a 126 window regulator on a 123. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1598364-w126-window-regulator-into-w123.html#post4812820

That's a great fix, the 126 conversion. I'll look in to doing that, there are some at the yard.
