240D engine making buzzing/farty sound

Something I noticed today while checking my injector return lines (which are wet),

I'm getting a buzzing, almost a high pitch farty sound from the engine, or somewhere around it.

it's intermittent during idle and constant when I bring the RPMs up.

Any idea what this could be?

I took a video, please have a look

could the bad rubber return hoses have anything to do with the noise?

anyone?

noise isn't there when the engine is cold. I've determined it is not the PS pump.

I couldn`t detect anything listening to your video, sounds like any other 240D engine. Do you hear this while driving, or when the Hood is open?

Change your return Lines and see if it clears the noise you hear, that would be a good place to start.

While the hood is open, the sound is pretty clear. While I'm driving it's really hard to tell.

But you're right, once I receive my return lines, I'll replace them and check again, this whole episode started because I was walking away from my car and noticed the smell of diesel coming from the engine bay. Different than the usual "old car smell" it has

Momentarily run the engine with all the belt driven accessories disconnected and see what happens.

It sounds like how it's supposed to sound.

I guess it's hard to hear in the video for those that don't know what to listen for. I'll see if I can come up with a way to pinpoint the location of the sound. Maybe I can use a piece of vinyl tube going to my ear as sort of a stethoscope
