87' 300td for sale that I am looking at. Opinions?
I have been looking for one in good shape for quite a while. Check this one out and see if it sounds like a fair deal. The car is only 41 miles from me so I am trying to get the owners on the phone so I can see it this weekend. thanks guys!

The price is a bit rich, if you look around you can do better.

The price would be rich if it were a 123. For a 124 diesel wagon it's not bad, given the thousands of $$$$ in parts it has (new tranny, head job, etc.) These cars are rare, and rust-free example in excellent condition is worth quite a bit. There are also a lot of lemons out there which aren't worth half that though. The trick is being able to determine the difference.
Happy hunting, |

gsxr, is one of your 87's a wagon? What kind of issues should one be aware of? Thanks!

Hi Joe,
No, both of mine are sedans. They are pretty much identical except the wagon has the self-leveling rear suspension. Main issues are: 1- overheating (due to plugged radiator or bad fan clutch) 2- cracked head from overheating (usually while trap oxidizer is still installed) 3- poor performance, especially from idle to 2000rpm (usually out-of-spec I/P, may be plugged ALDA line) 4- A/C problem$ (manifold ho$e leak$, compre$$or, both are expen$ive) 5- climate control (a lot of the vacuum actuators under the dash fail after 15 years) 6- cruise control (amplifier fails - $150 for a rebuilt) 7- assorted oil leaks 8- the sound encapsulation panels under the engine & tranny are usually "lost" (and cost $500+ to replace if you want the car quieter) 9- Varioius rubber suspension pieces may need to be replaced after 15 years There are several threads on this forum with more details on the overheating & cracked head problems. Do a search and you'll probably find a lot to read. There were only about 4000 diesel W124's brought into the USA in 1987, and I think only about 1000 of them were wagons. So if you want a 1987 300TD in excellent shape you'll have to really search, AND be willing to pay a premium when you find The One. (My numbers might be off, I don't have Nitske (sp?) book in front of me...) Good luck, |

Hey Joe:
I too would think that by watching, you can find one for less. One of our guys up here in Michigan just got a nice one for around 5k. Got to see it the other day and its very nice. On the other hand, a car is worth what it is worth to you. I bought my 7-seater as compared to a mini-van and therefore think I got an awesome deal. Just put a wheel bearing in your 300. Still running nearly perfect. Don

I agree with all the comments from the rest. I to have an 87 300TD than has only experianced the over heating problem. Everything still works. The milage listed on the add is way off. Maybe down hill with a tail wind.
