quick question...re: oil in injection pump

As part of a big project (head removal etc...) I changed the gasket on the fuel pump attached to the IP. When I removed the fuel pump (not just the primer pump, but the entire assembly), about a cup of oil drained out of the IP. When I'm ready to start the car, do I need to somehow manually put oil into the IP or can I just start the car and let it fill by itself??

If memory serves me during the rebuild of the 240D I removed a "fill plug" on the side furtherest from the engine of the FI pump and added some engine oil. Look for something on the side that looks like a fill plug.

On the older 240D body that preceded the W123, the injection pump had a separate oil reservoir, with a fill cap. It was a red plastic cap about an inch or so in diameter and had the word "OEL" molded into the top surface. The oil in here was always pristine, clean since it did not mix with the engine oil. In those applications you pulled the red cap and poured engine oil in (from a can in those days, remember that?) and measured with a dip stick. I recall there being on on the red cap but others on the forum have indicated I was halucinating at the time. I do remember using a dip stick to measure the oil level though.

I have read in other threads that the newer cars have a line that fills the injection pump from the engine oil circulation system. In this case the oil would be black, like engine oil is in a few miles.

So, if your pump spilled nice clean oil, you likely have to fill it separately. If it spilled black engine oil, then you probably don't have to fill it. I would try doing a search on the subject as it comes up nearly monthly and there are some guys that rebuild the entire engine on this forum. They usually provide excellent information to fill in the blanks for those of us with less experience. Hope this helps, Jim

" remove the fill plug and add 0.4 liter of oil initial fill when replacinf IP" 617 Engine manual, 07.1, 200, Removal and Installation of IP, bottom of page 4 shows the fill plug on the out board side of the IP below and slightly forward of the ALDA. Its a hex head probably 17 mm or so. Good Luck!

I think all IPs from 1974 on are engine lubed. There is a small oil feed line to the IP and the oil returns via the chain case.

If not there will be an overflow tube on the engine side and a red filler cap.

I'd fill it anyway -- far too expensive to trash due to lack of oil
