Transmission Swap - metal shaving in pan :(
Hey all,
Not too long ago the transmission in our 85 300D started slipping badly. it started as a 3-4 flare and then it quickly just began slipping completely in 4th. Did some research and between the slipping and the long delay between park and reverse it seemed like the old tranny was probably due for a rebuild (about 200K on it...) I started looking around for another transmission and came across my exact 85 CA-only 722.4 "recently rebuilt" on ebay. it seemed like the universe was hooking me up! I ordered the transmission and started my first DIY transmission swap. I'll post my findings and tips for others in another post, but long story short it went in pretty smoothly with a couple specific tools recommended by other members. I pulled the pan on the new transmission today to replace the filter and get her filled up. to my surprise and heartache, I found a good-sized metal shaving in the bottom of the pan. looks to be copper, about 3/4" long, very thin. I looked around the valvebody and didn't see anything obviously broken, so I'm afraid something happened inside. Am I crazy for trying to run with this transmission? I can't really afford to be out of the car for another couple weeks, so my instincts say to give it a go and see what happens... if it's obviously broken or doesn't shift correctly I'll try to go back to the seller... super bummer! any and all advice or thoughts are appreciated! I don't think that there is anything that big associated with the valve body.
