1984 300td dome lights....
The dome lights on my 300td won't come on with any of the doors open. I can manually turn on the front light and the rear light with the switch, but in the door open position, the lights won't come on. I also don't hear a buzzer when the key is in the ignition and door is open. Could the two be related? Also, no gauge lights...Since the dome lights do come on, I'm thinking the fuse must be ok. Any ideas?

It's most likely door switch, it resides in the hinge area, it's a little black plastic plunger that gets pushed in when the door closes. It's spring loaded to return when the door opens, which is what triggers the dome lights and buzzer.

Answer
My best guess:
The door switches have failed, typically arc (burning) or corrosion of the contact points. They are CHEAP, less than $8.00 each. Part # 0015458714 Door Contact Switch application 1984 300TD Front Left (1) Front Right (1) Rear Left (1) Rear Right (1) .

However, you will not get the rear dome light to operate on door opening, as only trigged by the hatch latch contact switch. These switches are N.L.A. and none of the used ones are any good. I have only found one used on that possibly worked, but the idiot shipper just put it loose in a box so the handle broke. In short, don't bother finding used as be fruitless. Even tried vstech, but alas, nothing.

Ok, I just thought it was strange that all the door switches would be screwed up, including the hatch. I have tried repeatedly jiggling, depressing, and otherwise fiddling with the switches on each door to no avail. Maybe I'll order one switch first to see if that fixes things.

If your domelight is like that in my '82 240D, and NONE of the doors activate it, the ON-OFF-DOOR switch in the light itself could be part of the problem. Over time, the domelight detent spring gets weak and/or it's contact gets corroded.
After it sits for a few weeks, I sometimes need to jiggle the switch on either the domelight OR the driver's door to get it working. Note - on that car only the front doors operate the front domelight. Note also - my '84 Euro TD setup is complicated by a delay module in the front domelight that keeps it on for several seconds after the door is closed. Happy Motoring, Mark
