W115 240D sounding weird

Just did a round trip yesterday of 200 miles from Buffalo to Toronto going a steady 55-60mph. Oil pressure always pegged and engine temp very normal. Got back last night and pulled up to my building and noticed my car sounded kinda louder and a little rough, maybe like it had a new exhaust leak perhaps. I checked the fluids today; coolant level was normal with no oil in it either, the transmission fluid was perfect and rosy, BUT, the engine oil was so low it didn't even show on the dipstick, not even at the very tip. How could the oil pressure be pegged but there be so little oil that there was nothing showing at all on the dipstick, and the engine temp was fine? I hope I did not start to roast the engine or something. PS - has 139,000 miles on her now.

Mike,
Hopefully some external leak that just occurred prior to shut down. Occams razor usually the simplest solution is the correct answer. Top off engine with oil and look for leaks.
Is your car a 1976? I have a 76 that I need help with the vacuum lines. I need a diagram or schematic or a good photo of the engine compartment. Can you help?
Thanks.

Schematic

I saw your other post about the vacuum diagram. I don't have cruise control in my '76 240D, so I am not sure if I'd be able to help you. I didn't even know the 240D could come with cruise control due to the lack of power. If you still need an engine pic, I can post one, but it'll be a while. I am in the process of moving back to Arizona.

Most engines will maintain oil pressure at cruise speeds even when several quarts low. Dry sump engines seem to be a bit better in this regard*. However, there is a point where oil pressure isn't maintained and you don't want to go there. I don't think you did. Like the fish said, top up oil and look for leaks.

*I used to work for a mad genius Porsche mechanic. He told me a classic 911 with a 10 (or so) quart oil capacity will usually maintain full oil pressure on just 4 quarts of oil as long as you aren't hot-rodding it.

My car always shows NO oil on the dipstick when I first check it....... always dip it several times...after waiting a few minutes if just running... so oil can drip down from the head area....as long as your oil was pegged all that time.... I am sure you are OK...but you do not want to press your luck...... LOL

Yeah, what they said -- a quart or two low is not a problem unless it starts to loose oil pressure. Not good for the oil as it's having to work hotter, but otherwise OK.

The bigger concern is the change in engine noise. Did you ever track that down? Was it really a new exhaust leak?

Thanks for help on photo of your engine.
Last night I found a photo of a 76 240D engine compartment, and what do you know. It showed my missing vac connection. So I am good right now.

Best of luck on your engine oil issue.

Noise

So, I just moved back to Phoenix and was finally able to do an oil change myself (what a pain in the ass), and as far as I can tell, the engine seems to sound normal again. Lesson learned; always check the oil level during fuel stops and not to rely solely on oil pressure and temp as to the level of oil in the engine. Now on to more pressing matters, like changing my A/C back to R12, 'cause it's just not cutting it in the AZ heat.

For the time it takes. Checking the oil level at the time of each fill up is an excellent habit to get into and keep. At some point it may even save you an engine.

With many current cars if the oil light comes on it can be too late. I am somewhat negligent of this myself at times. Although I have been starting to work my way back into always checking. Other than just only before going on a long distance run.

It occurred to me one day while driving along that if an engine springs an oil leak. This is about the only way you may catch it before the oil level drops too far as it worsens.

I usually check the oil and coolant first thing in the morning.
Good to take a look at the tires for flats or low pressure before pulling away from the house too.

I always check my oil when on a trip, after filling up with fuel. It has sat 5 minutes or more and even if all the oil has not run back to the pan, it will be close. Pull the stick out, wipe it off, stick it back in and pull it back out and see where you are at.

Do a quick visual around the engine for other problems, coolant/oil/fuel leaks, fan belts, any thing getting loose etc....

Did you make sure when you did the oil change, to confirm that the two piece oil filter was there?

Did you also clean and change the oil in the air filter?

Did you also change the oil in the injection pump?

Loosing oil in this model can be a result of the vacuum pump having a bad diaphragm, if this is bad....it will suck the oil right from the engine...

There is also a diaphragm in the governor on the injection pump, if this tears you will notice smoke, high idle and leading to a run away engine symptoms..

Clear line looks good/clear

No excessive smoke or high idle to date

Did you make sure that tube down the center of the oil canister IS OPEN to oil flow ?
Most people do not even know it has a hole... and needs to be open....

Hole?

Not sure exactly what you mean by that. The central tube down the middle of the cartridge filter is "open" with rubber gaskets at each end to fit snugly to the main bolt shaft, and has a bunch of holes/perforations in it for oil flow.
I just completed the IP oil change. Another PITA w115 job with old diesel fuel all over the garage floor that had built up in the pump. It kind of had a lacquer or turpentine smell to it.

PS - If anyone has W115 oil canisters for sale with a retrofitted drain on it, I would gladly buy it off you. I'll even send you my original one back.

How did you manage not to get run over on the QEW? I was up that way last summer, 75-80 most of the way.
