Question Is this a legit OM603 #22 Cylinder Head. Picture

I happened across an 87 300D with what appears to be a #22 cylinder head in a pick and pull yard today and I'm thinking about trying to grab it tomorrow. However, the "22" is not raised with the casting. Instead, the "22" is stamped into the head, just before the raised "01" in the picture. The area where the "22" is stamped appears to have been cast with no numbers, i.e. it does not appear that a lower number was ground off. I'm wondering if it was cast at a point just prior to it being designated as a #22. It could just be a fraud.

Have any of you heard of making in this way?

I apologize for the poor quality, but it is hard to get light and focus.

2x. I'll go look at my car (which has a #22 head) in the sunlight tomorrow.

If the PO used the older prechambers, then the injectors won't be angled.

I wish I'd taken a few more pictures. Nevertheless, this post is quite instructive. I'm thinking the one I'd seen is more of a fraud.

At pick and pull prices, its a 603 head, it doesn't matter what casting number it is, I'd nab it.

As noted in the link... You want to see machining at the front of the casting number on a 22 head.

I can't imagine why the head series number would be machined off...

This is what a #22 head stamping should be like.

The first part is machined off. Don't know why.

The machining is for clearance of the angled injectors

Paul - if you can, nab the vacuum nipple off the ALDA - mine went missing and so far I have not found a P/P diesel to get one from. Nice find BTW !

I passed on it; just too much on my plate right now. I don't recall seeing the angled machining anyway. There were about 10 to 12 124s, including a CE. I wish could take some time off work and go play some more. There were even 2x 15 inch AMG rims. I did grab a beautiful W108 grill, minus the star, for my office wall.
