two questions 1980 300SD

Instrument light is out. Can someone help me with how to check / change the bulb and or fuse. All fuses in box ok, but I seem to recall hearing the may be another.

Other question is easiest way to get at the front speakers to change them.

Any help appreciated as always.

There are small screws in the corners of the speaker grilles...two of them, I think, on the side closest to you when sitting in the car. Once they are removed, the grilles will lift off, then there are more screws attaching the speakers to the dash itself. Be careful when removing the wiring, so you don't break the connectors.

When choosing replacement speakers, also pay attention to the magnet size...some higher-quality speakers have magnets that are too large to fit...they hit the ducts for the ACC vents. The "mounting depth" of the speakers is usually printed on their box.

Just lived through the speaker change....we went through every speaker in the shop looking for an acceptable replacement for the front speakers. Mike is right about the depth and the AC ductwork. I couldn't get a coax that would fit without pushing up the grills, so I ended up with Pioneer 2 ways that sound pretty decent....definitely better than what was there. The installer made a bracket that allowed him to bolt them down (the MB speakers have a 3-bolt pattern that doesn't match after-market stock) and the grills fit back perfectly.

We made up for the lack of bass with 5.25 Fosgates in the back that make it sound pretty full. If you are interested, I still have the box number with the model of the Pioneers in my trunk....

The grill screws are towards the front of the covers. You have to take them out, then pry up (GENTLY) the front and slide them towards you. The speakers are then bolted to the dash.
