87 300D shifting a little hard

I have driven the car a little over 150 miles since getting it on the road. I have been slowly changing fluids and doing other small maintenance items all while looking for any issues. I drained the trans and converter and replaced the filter and gasket. After replacing the fluid I expected the slightly rough shifting to be gone but it isn't. Honestly the pan and old fluid/filter was so clean I feel kinda bad I did the work. Should I consider adding some sort of additive to the trans, or is there an adjustment that should be made?

Assuming you don't have a vacuum leak you could adjust the trans modulator CCW. Just keep track of how many turns so you don't chase your tail later.

Could also be the VCV out of adjustment.

I wouldn't want to rule out a vacuum leak if that is what could be the problem. How would I check for that?

Do your self a favor and go and buy a MityVac to test the vacuum lines and various other components in the system. It takes the guess work out of finding the leaks.

The VCV is fairly easy to adjust if you have a helper. It is located on the side of the injection pump and has two vacuum lines going into the top of it. There are two 10mm bolts holding it to the IP. With the car OFF, have you helper hold the throttle pedal wide open. Then loosen the two bolts holding the VCV, then rotate the VCV clockwise until you can't move it anymore, then be sure to hold it there and tighten the two bolts. With it adjusted properly you should see around 12-14 inches of vacuum going to the transmission at idle and 0 inches of vacuum at WOT.

The best way to check the vacuum while driving is to take a vacuum line that can reach into the cabin from the engine bay and "T" it into the line going to the transmission and hook the other end to your MityVac or other vacuum gauge and watch it as you drive.

By the way, there is a lot of information on this subject around the forum.

I like harder shifting, it matches my harder driving style and using a lot of pedal. But the engine has to be able to produce the power, if its under, then hard shifts are annoying.

Try driving your car harder... ? You might like it. I say this in all seriousness.

Hooked a vacuum gauge up last evening and the line going to the trans has 12.5 inches vacuum at idle and it drops quickly when I hit the throttle. Didn't drive to check WOT reading. My old mighty vac still works so I tried pulling vac on the line to the trans. It won't hold vacuum. So it looks like it is time to slide under the car and look further. Thanks to all for pointing me the right direction.

I have a similar problem too with 84 300SD. Played with mighty vac today and found that vacuum comes to the switchover plastic valve on top of the IP and nothing comes out, no vacuum to the trany. Can anyone help me with identifying this part . Where can I buy a replasement? Here is the picture
Thanks
