Wiper turns wrong direction

Afternoon,

I just finished repalcing the heater blower motor in my 1984 190d. I had to remove the wiper assembly to do it. After I got it back together, and put on the wiper arm at it's regular rest place, I expected it to turn from the passenger side to the driver side, but it moved toward the passenger side first. I immediately turned off the ignition switch. I tried the wiper arm in the center of the windshield, and when I turned it on it did turn toward the passenger side first. So, this leaves me no place to put on the wiper where it will come to rest in it's regular resting place on the drivers side. It has to move to the drivers side first. I'm wondering what I could have done to cause this.

Take the wipers off. Then turn on the wipers for a moment and then off allowing them to come to rest. Put a piece of tape on the shaft pointing toward the normal rest position. Then turn on the wipers and verify that they work properly. If they do put the wipers back on and you're good to go.

If they don't it's likely that you put the wiper arm on backwards under the dash allowing the shaft to turn backwards.

How could this be? The arm that connects the motor to the wiper arm turn stub can only be put on in one direction.
