Anyone have a glow plug reamer

Hi folks,

Tis that time of year again and Im planning on R&Ring the last 4 of my GPs did the other two last winter. Anyone have a reamer for a 603 engine I can rent or borrow. Checked the rental list and the fellow who is listed has not been around since 2006.

TIA

Does it actually work as described?
I changed the glow plugs last year and only have 3-4k on them and one (maybe even 2) already failed. I think there is too much carbon build-up and that's why they failed.
I'm planning to change those 1 or 2 GPs this weekend. How does this work with borrowing/renting?

I've got the 61x/603 reamer... works on all iron heads, and the straight injector 603 heads

In the Picture or 2 Factory Made Glow Plug Reamers.

You would need the Short one on the Top and that is the same as is used on the 617.952 Turbo Diesels or the older models that use the Bosch Pencile type Blow Plugs.

The Bit/Reamer End is 7mm
For a while People were saying to use a 7mm Drill Bit turned by hand. But, that is your Choice.

There is also another Design of Glow PLug Reamers that is made all in one piece and the Reamer Bit has only 2 U shaped grooves in it.

Not using Bosch or Beru Glow Plugs can cause early Glow Plug Failure. If the Fuel is not burning when it is supposed to or effeciently in the Pre-combustion Chamber that can shorten the life of the Glow Plugs.

Fuel Injection Pump Timing, Valve Timing, Compression and the Condition of the Injectors have an effect on the Glow Plugs.
Only City Driving tends to build up more Carbon; that is My Car and I always get some Carbon when I ream the Glow Plugs which I pulled out about 2 Weeks ago.

When the Glow Plug is gets Voltage the it pulls high amps for a second or 2 and as it gets hot it settles down to arouns 16 amps. I bleieve that means if the Glow Plug does not get hot as fast it pulls the higher amps longer.
Carbon surrounding the Glow Plug Tip allows heat from the Glow Plug to be conducted into the Cylinder Head keeping the Plug cooler and causing it to pull higher amps for a longer than normal amount of time. That also means the Air in the Pre-chamber is not getting heated as much as it is supposed to per amount of Preglow time.

Thanks for the replies. Vstech yes that would be great, I'll pm you. Im planning on doing this next week so no rush rush.

Yes the 87 is pretty much a city driver, low annual miles type of use and I have no idea when they were last replaced except the two I did last winter. I'm planning on taking off the crossover pipe and IM and sending them out to be cleaned as well. If I do it right and my kids dont complain too much, Ill be sending the injectors to greezer for a rebuild too.

They can be made if you can drill a hole down the Center of a old Glow Plug or something else.

I used to make the ones surrounded by the Yellow Lines but stopped over 3 Years ago.

Vstech, sent you a confirming pm.

I like the simplicity, but I dont have a welder or a bit like the one you used Diesel. I hope this helpful to more resourceful member than I.

I did not weld them they are Epoxied in. Also People have been using a 7mm Drill Bit instead of a reamer.

Like I said the hard part is drilling the Hole down the Center. I have a Lathe so that was no issue for Me. I am not sure how the others managed to make theirs.

All this has been previously covered in other threads. Likely in the DIY Repair Links.

A reminder here.... for those new to this game....
you want to use HEAVY GREASE in the flutes of the reamer or drill...
and just to IN a little and BACK OUT...
repeating that process
gradually going all the way needed....

AND CLEANING THE FLUTES ..... AND ....... RE APPLYING the GREASE each time...
this is to trap the CRUD and or carbon... instead of it being left in the precombustion chamber to mess up the dispersion of the fuel as it is trying to get to the radially drilled holes leading to the combustion chamber...

As long as the Grease is thick enough to stay in the Flutes/Grooves of the Reamer it does not matter what you use.

I tried Vasoline once but it get too runny fast.

I just used a tap of the correct thread, one time. It didn't seem to do much, other than clean slight carbon from the threads in the head. When I have had the injectors out, I always look down into the pre-chambers with the glow plugs on. I don't see any carbon, so not sure what the factory reamer is intended to do.

I am trying post a pic. In the Pic the area inside of the Red Rectangle is the area where Carbon builds up.

There should have been no Carbon in the threaded area of the Cylinder Head as the Glow Plug seals on the tapered shoulder (like a Spark Plug) on the Glow Plug Body right before the Tip/Heater Element sticks out from the Body.
