87 300D OM603 fit into 91 300D?

I have an 87 300D OM603 6 cyl. Have been offered a 91 300D 5 cyl. Can I just swap out the engines? Or is it best to swap engines and trannys together? Big question is the 87 power plant compatible with the 91 tranny?

The bellhousings should be the same, but the shift points will probably be different. I don't know how well it would work out.

Even the 3.0 and 3.5 OM603's have different transmission shift points.

If you were in a pinch, maybe you could swap valve bodies, but it seems like it would be easier to just swap the engine and trans together if you are determined to do such a swap.

Is the 5 cylinder blown? If not, why not just drive it as is? They certainly are not as quick as the 603s but I've driven much slower cars. Plus, I sort of like that 5 cylinder sound.

The 5 cylinder is a better engine (better mileage, more dependable). I'd keep that if possible. The 6 cylinder has more power, but the cracking head issue can be a real pain. If your OM603 already has a replacement improved head, then that is less of a concern.

I'd plan on keeping the OM603 motor with its transmission. You will probably also need the radiator and I'm sure some other bits. Front springs and spring pads may also need to be replaced due to heavier engine.

The 5cyl trans is a .418... MUCH smaller than the .3xx in the 6cyl trans...

Thanks for the advice. The free 91 has a scored bore in one of the cylinders created when someone tried to remove the prechamber...the owner told me its getting a lot of blow by and not healing itself...that's why I was asking about the swap out.

the 87 has electronic idle control that the 91 does not... there will be issues I'm sure.
