Can you help me identify this item so I can replace it?
Hello everyone,
I can not find this part listed ... and suspect if I knew what it was called I would be able to locate it better. It's under a foot long, and if I were naming it - I'd call it the accelerator linkage. My part broke while I was driving, and I lost the ability to accelerate. While the engine starts and runs fine, without this rod in place (it sits under the turbo) and connects by a ball socket at each end, in opposite directions. If anyone can help me identify and source this part, it would make my 300D a happy car again!! My car is a 1991 300 D I think it's called a throttle linkage, and maybe I just need replace the ball sockets? Last edited by Rhauss; 11-21-2014 at 09:57 PM. Reason: add missing car detail |

Slang name: "Doggie Bone"
(See Pictograms)
There is one Running Vertically from the Accelerator cable Bearing Point to the Injection Pump fuel control lever. You're gonna have to "Feel" for this one it's not easily seen. AND it's the only control rod whose center section is actually a non adjustable all metal "Rod" part #000 070 84 75 There are Two running on top of the OM602.962 One runs from the Transmission bowden cable bearing lever ACROSS the Valve cover to the Accelerator control cable bearing point. The Passenger side of this control rod is "slid-able" back onto itself. part # 001 070 57 75 Second one connects the Tempomat (Electrical Cruise Control Motor) to the accelerator control system. The Passenger side of this control rod is Fixed. part # 001 070 47 75 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______ Your picture matches one of the two control rods [Transmission or Tempomat/Cruise Control] that run across the top of the engine. (I can't tell which from your picture.) BUT even if both of these rods were removed you'd still have the vertical control rod that actually "Accelerates" the fuel flow rate on the I.P. So, loss of acceleration says either: A. Zomeone (Incorrectly)replaced your all Metal (Vertically aligned) control rod [#000 070 84 75] with one of the other two. or B. Zomezing is "Binding" in the Accelerator control system or c. All of the above. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ The EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog) does not [Unfortunately] show a part designation for individual "Ball Socket" ends. The parts numbers pictograms are in no particular order. ( You'll have to compare parts numbers with the descriptions above.) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ All of the "Doggie Bones" HAVE a very specific required/measured Length that must be adhered to for proper Accelerator Linkage operation. (See Link Below) All three of the 'Doggie Bones" are specific and individual (I.E. No Mix and Match) ALSO: The sockets and Balls of the linkages MUST be Kept CLEAN and Lubricated. ALL of the Accelerator control system (Rods,Bearing Points and Cables) MUST be kept clean and Lubricated !!! There is also at least one adjustment point on the accelerator control cable inside the passenger compartment up under the Driver's footwell. http://www.w124performance.com/service/w124CD1/Program/Engine/602_603/30-1010.pdf

Why not fix what you have? You'll need to figure out the orientation of the 2 halves to each other (install them and mark the alignment). I'd stop at the hardware and find a piece of tubing that just fits OVER the rod (black steel pipe often works - NO GALVANIZED! - and won't mess with the weldor) and take the rod and your new sleeve to a welding shop (assuming you lack welding equipment). For a few $$ they can fuse the sleeve over the broken area making it stronger than original.
As an example of what I'm talking about, look at my build thread. I did the modifications to my shift rods using this method and it worked well. On my computer it comes up at page 12 or 13ish. Dan |
