Differential output seal 79 240D
Replacing the axle seals on a differential I picked up. Showing two part numbers possible according to chassis.
I saw something in the FSM about this, but wondering if one will work for both. Kinda like the from crank seal with half shoulder. Options are Thru 163338 Or from 163339 I may be able to get the vin off the car, but safer ordering the universal one if an option as who knows if it's been changed. It had a new rear mount on it so someone has been in there. Last edited by Lucas; 12-09-2014 at 11:49 PM. |

Perhaps pull the ones in the car first...and look for any identifying numbers.. or the shape to match up to what is available .....

Good idea. Will do tomorrow. I'll try and get the vin for giggles. Anyone know who to talk to at pelican?
I realized I don't have a 123 manual. Trying to find that part for in the FSM for the 115 at least. Obviously the same. One last thing I'm 99% sure about is using the axle spacers on my donor differential. Fortunately they hacked the axles in half so I have cv's on there. My understanding is those spacers match this piece, item #23. To get the proper length into the differential. Fortunately I'll be able to do this on the bench and have some time while the axles get rebuilt. I went and bugged the euro shop. His wife always gets mad at me. But I swear I'll go there for something eventually. Lol. |

Differential output seal 79 240D
I bet I'll find it on here. But he said not to use rtv on the cover as it will vibrate and the bolts come out.
He said to use some thinner watery stuff. Hydra something. Edit: I'm slowly getting it. It has something to do with the bearing cap or those hex bolts on the outside around where the axle goes in. I'm also seeing 2 versions of the 65 mm size. I gotta go back to the diff types. FYI, pre dec 1969 the 220D had a 4.08 rear end in it. Brutal. Last edited by Lucas; 12-10-2014 at 12:53 AM. |

Alright here's the difference. I may be a little screwed without a vin. At least they are cheap. Order both maybe.
Anyway to tell these apart? Both are 65 mm. The six bolt hexagon type bearing cover diff. Pics on pelican are hard to tell. The knock off version of the same vin looks drastically different. No knock off for later vin, and it's picture was from the other side. Maybe pelican will know. I may have to call the classic center. Maybe dealership can run the part number on the diff. Why oh why did I find a 79. Where is stretch at? |
