ASD Function Indicator On At Speed
I have a recently purchased 1995 E300D with 125K miles. It runs very nicely. However, the yellow indicator light with exclamation point on the speedometer (not the lower one next to the glow plug light) for the ASD comes on when I hit 85 mph. Lose a few mph and it goes out, only to come on when speed goes up again. New, balanced OEM-sized snow tires on OEM rims all around, inflated to 36psi, on dry roadway. Hydraulic reservoir at D/S front filled to well above minimum level.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this? I'm assuming at this speed, the locking feature on the diff does not function. Any ideas or suggestions most appreciated! Regards, Tom Closter, NJ |

I have had the same problem with my '95 E300D for years. The indicator would come on at varying speeds between 55 and 65. For a while I could feel the ASD work (grab) at low speeds, then it stopped functioning but the indicator would still light when I spun the tires. In the past year the indicator light has not come on at all, now the malfunction light (next to the glow plug light) is on from the moment I start the car. Have you seen this thread http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/180544-asd-problem-94-e300d.html? I still haven't gotten the blink codes to work in socket number 5. (get blink codes in other sockets though)

I'll be curious to see what this adds to the discussion.
Is the abs light coming on as well? The ASD gets its inputs from the ABS sensors as far as I know. Might be worth cleaning the metal shavings off of the abs sensor magnets.

For SNG, try engaging ABS as well.

My ABS works and I cleaned the sensors a few years ago. I was under the car yesterday looking at the solenoid/valve and it's pretty crusty. Not sure if this system is "smart" enough to self-test components and report problems. Or the computer is shot which would explain why I can't get blink codes.
What is SNG?

If only speeders were affected by their actions it would be one thing... but truly innocent people just in the wrong place at the wrong time are often the victims. 85 or more in Montana, the Autobahn in Germany,,,, sure ... but New Jersey ? Not out of line to comment or voice disapproval of that admission. (I have had my Permanent Peace Officer license in Texas since 1980....)

You're "bravely" located even further away, so it does surprise me to read such asinine comments, and when you offer nothing to the conversation, it is out of line to make unrelated "shots over the bow"-type comments. You didn't know the answer to the question, you don't know the OP, you don't know that he actually drives that fast, you've never witnessed it. Did you post just to make yourself feel relevant or regale us with the fact that you're a Peace Officer? "Of that admission"? Why don't you file a report and see what sticks. Quote:

I mentioned my background just in case you are not smart enough .....which it certainly looks like is the case... to recognize that 85 mph is not safe where the speed limit does not allow that..... and that I may have seen more stuff as a result of my training and background than you have........

ASD Function Indicator on at Speed
[QUOTE=dieseleverythin;3413753] Have you seen this thread http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/180544-asd-problem-94-e300d.html?
Sorry to drop out of this discussion for a while. Lost my job as a result of a major RIF at my company just after sending the original query and had a whole bunch of loose ends to tie up. Just getting my life back to a bit of normalcy, though without a similar job yet, and at my age, probably not ever. Looks like I'll have plenty of time to look after the car! Thanks for the referral to the thread. I did see it, having combed the archives for ASD details. One solution for me to try, other than the very righteous leathermang's concern for the adherence to all speed laws to protect the general safety, will be to pull the sensors and see if they need cleaning. Based on the system's design, I doubt the ASD will engage at 80, but it was disconcerting the first couple of times the warning light came on at highway speeds. It has come on at speeds under 20mph when conditions are snowy or icy. The lower dash trouble light for ASD comes on when the key is in the first position, but never at any other time. leathermang: Firstly, I didn't say I was driving in Jersey. I spend a lot of time in Vermont and if you don't drive around 80mph anywhere on I-89, you're being passed by old farm pickups or Toyota Corollas with elderly women drivers. Secondly, while the speed limit maxes out at 65 in NJ, anyone who has driven on the NJ Turnpike can tell you the defacto speed limit is around 75 or 80 along stretches where the roadway has six lanes in each direction. And how I drive is basically my business and, until you're a NJ state trooper, not yours. I'll determine whether and where it's safe to drive at 80, or more, based on my 50 years of driving experience. |
