bad glow plug or electrical problem?

Hi,

I have noticed an intermittent problem regarding the glow plug light and the seat belt light right next to it, on my 1983 300D. SOmetimes when I start it, and turn the key so to go through a glow cycle, the glow plug light nor the seat belt light turn on. The odd part is that if I tap the area a few times, it seems to make it turn on.

I have been told trhat sometimes this is indicative of a bad glow plug, however, wouldnt that only cause the glow light to not work? Since neither it or the seat belt light works, could it be bulbs or a bad wire or something? How would I investigate, and how would I get to those lights?

BTW, my glow plugs checked out via the resistance test, and Ive never had a problem starting it.

Thanks

JMH

P.S. Watch the cv boots on the rear axle. I had one fail going 75 mph just north of Knoxville TN, trying to get to DE. It had ripped and lost the fluid, and was really hot and smoking. I figured it wasnt fit for driving on, and was worried that Id bind up the drivetrain, and didnt want it to sieze on me at such speeds. An expensive fix, but these are strong cars, so its a prudent move to check these 20 yearold rubber parts and get the shafts replaced before something bad happens...
