Cool Real World 0-60: 240D auto edition

This is the real world 0-60 test for a 1977 240D auto.
Real world includes having the AC on and 3 adult male passengers weighing about 200lbs each. No luggage and this car had no rear bumper because it was in an accident. The car has 146K miles on and runs extremely well but seems to have a worn out lift pump or some sort of leak in the fuel system as once it sits a week or so it need the primer pumped to get it to start. Not sure how much fuel is in the tank in this test.

Prepare for unrivaled acceleration:

In your defense the road conditions appeared to be wet. I'm sure that cost you a second or two

How painfully slow! I don't think I could handle that in the local traffic.

wow...that's insane. That makes my 190d look like a rocket! I can pull a 0-60 in about 19 seconds if I really rev it up in each gear...and that's with a 2.85 differential, not the 3.65 that a normal 240d has...

I went from driving this to my 190D 2.5 and was absolutely amazed at how fast my 190D felt. I've really never had problems in traffic with my 190D except for long grades.

When we bought this car, we were going to drive the hour home at about 11PM until our Sprinter (we took it in case we needed to tow it) broke down on the way to Walmart to buy trailer brake lights to make it legal to drive (the owner said he had taillights for it but didn't this was in a rear end collision which is why he was selling it) so we had to wait for my dad to come up so we could get home. I was sitting in this car for 3 hours before my dad had gotten to my brother and my friend in the Sprinter and took them over to Walmart to get the brake lights and by the time they got there, it started to moderately rain. I used the knowledge I learned from watching Red Green as a child to duct tape the lights to the car and wire them up, surprisingly was able to get them to stay on pretty well though the car was very wet. We then went back to the Sprinter, grabbed some stuff out of it, then went to Waffle House. By the time we got out of Waffle House, the rain was coming down in buckets and the visibility was pretty much nonexistent. My dad decided he wanted to drive it home as it is the parts car for his 240D and got home before my friend and I driving my dad's car cause we stopped on the side of the interstate for 15 minutes because we couldn't see the lanes at all (for some reason there are no reflectors on 675) and our car had good headlights, not like the old sealed beams in the 240D. When we got home at around 4AM, my dad said he drove foot to the floor the whole way down. Our Sprinter was then towed back the following day.

Are you sure there isn't something wrong with the car? Going with the timer on the video, your 0-60 time is 52 seconds. According to ForcedInduction, the 0-60 for a 240D automatic is 21 seconds... a tripling of the 0-60 time just because you have three guys in the back seat and the AC on seems a little excessive?

54 seconds.. Should be about 25 seconds or so with ideal road conditions and flat road with an automatic.

I wouldn't want to drive that particular 240D with that performance, it just couldn't handle the freeway. A good running 240D I would trust to move out of the way.

It seemed to jump off the line, and then do nothing. Is it up-shifting way to early?

I think it's shifting fine but it's going to be much slower because the AC is on. This has the York compressor which just drags the engine down. Also, there was a slight grade on that road.

That is tremendously slow. My 4-cylinder diesel motorhome does a 30 second 0-60 time and it's pulling around 13,000-14,000 pounds.

600 pounds worth of people, and ac on, that is still dramatic. 52 seconds? I could see 30 something maybe.

I wonder what a 0-60 with only the driver in the car and no AC would be like.

I think that would dramatically increase the performance.
