Bent window channel drivers side 1985 300 D
1985 300 D
Rolling driver's power window up yesterday, we heard a bang a little over halfway up, but the window continued as normal. The window worked fine several times today. Late this afternoon, the window went to about halfway and stopped. It also would not continue even with manual assistance. It would roll down from this point and up to this point just fine. Upon removing the door panel, the first thing I found was a loose nut on the upper stud for mounting the regulator. Further inspection revealed that the inner lip on the channel the glass sits in was bent outward toward the interior of the car and was catching on a protrusion on the inside of the webbed portion of the regulator body just aft of the motor. I removed the regulator and used pliers to compress the channel(which bolts to the regulator) back into shape. I did not remove the glass as I do not know how. Upon reassembly and testing, the window will roll down (scraping the regulator body), but hangs and bends about halfway up. Disassembled once more and left regulator above halfway. The window does just fine as long as we do not roll down past halfway. Researching the web, it appears that the channel the window sits in is only available as part of the glass. Most of the drivers window glasses I find do not come with this channel on them. I am also hesitant to buy a glass with channel and install it (don't quite know how, just yet) without understanding what caused the current one tho snag and bend or why it still does. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thank You |

Is that lower channel piece rusty? I've seen them rusted to the point they loose integrity and will bend easily out of shape and no longer clamp down on the glass. You could get just that piece from a yard car I bet. Is there anything else that would account for why it no longer clears? Plastic bushings worn/missing? Something else bent? Wish I could do better for you but W123 doors are not that familiar to me.

I can not imagine the channel the glass sits in to be bent w/o the glass breaking.
I have also seen that channel so rusty it swells up to the point it is difficult to get the glass out of the door. One problem these regulators have, is they get bent over time. there is no stop when the window goes to the top, and the motor will keep pushing till you release the button. I was first aware of this when I bought the 85 300D back in 97. The door panel would slightly bulge out when the glass got to the top. later on I had to replace the regulator when it broke. How did you remove the regulator w/o removing the glass? The glass is bolted to the regulater with 2 10mm bolts. Lower the glass about 1/2 way till the bottom of the glass shows in the door openings. remove the 2 bolts, push the glass up manually, shove a wedge in between the glass and the door. this will keep the glass from falling down. remove the two screws on the plastic block for the motor wiring, and pull the 2 wires inside the door. Then lower the regulator, remove the 10mm nuts that holds the regulator in. think there are 5. To lift the glass out, remove the rubber strip on the inside edge of the door. pry it off gently so you don`t tweak it. It is held on with some spring clips. Remove the wedge, lower the glass down and tilt it and remove out through the top of the window opening. Charlie
