Emergency shut off OM 601
Manually actuating diesel shut off valve on OM 601won't shut off engine.
O rings and crush washers have been changed so much air was let inside fuel system, but I thought manual valve would starve engine from all fuel flow. |

If the engine starts and stays running, air in the fuel system isn't a problem. Cover the air intake with a block of wood or computer mouse pad - something the engine can't suck though the manifold. That's the quickest way with a runaway. If it's just idling along and a sharp jab of the stop lever doesn't do it, loosen the injector lines until the engine stops.
Has anyone tried discharging a C02 fire extinguisher into the air intake of a runaway? Or even Halon? Sixto 83 300SD |

That would do it. I keep a halon extinguisher in the car, ... plenty of CO2 in the garage.

On my 601 I have to push the lever all the way down and hold for a second or two.
If you replaced the O ring and the linkages were pulled out of position within the injection pump, the lever wouldn't function. Hopefully that isn't the case. When you did the O ring, did you pull the stop lever shaft out of the IP? A halon or CO2 extinguisher would work, but just be damn sure you don't have an ABC dry powder extinguisher. That would destroy the engine instantly. ![]()

The 601/2/3 stop lever should move with the vacuum key switch. Turn off the engine and it should move down and stay down until you turn the key to glow. How long it stays down reflects the integrity of the vacuum system. In my blue '87 300D it would stay down for at least a couple of weeks. IIRC in my white '87 300D it wouldn't stay down more than 24-48 hours. If the engine shuts off with the key but the lever doesn't move down, it's not properly attached to/in the IP.

om 601
Time to fess up........ Copper washer slipped off of valve and disappeared.
I took several valve parts out to try to retrieve washer, along with side plate hoping to find it. It is still in there somewhere. I reassembled everything and tried to start it thinking it might fall through to bottom of IP. I was amazed when it started up, but it ran poorly and won't shut down unless I put in gear and popped the clutch. Is there any way to access IP valve body and shut down assembly without pulling IP? Is it possible that IP may still be saved? |

What you're doing is SOOOOOO risky my friend. If you get the linkage in that area put on wrong or jammed, the engine will rev up to redline and neither the key nor the stop lever will shut it down. You'll need to block the air supply or crack 3 injector headlines to shut the motor off. Since you'll probably have the air box off, hardlines are your best bet. It's very scary and it'll damage the motor.
I think at this point since you've dropped parts into the IP and the linkages have been disassembled, you'll either need to have the IP repaired by a Bosch facility or swap in a different pump. The IP is a very complicated piece of machinery with very precise settings and tolerances, and shouldn't be taken apart by individuals without substantial experience and knowledge.

I was afraid that I was in for a lot of work when I dropped the washer. I am not fully sure what part the linkage is and if I disturbed it. Do you have any idea who I could contact to overhaul IP
